UPDATE February 2024 – Bahar Tandoori has now received a 4-star rating. In a statement, the management team have said:
“After an inspection which took place on 26th January 2024, Bahar Tandoori has received by post a 4 out of 5 hygiene rating. While we were aiming for 5, this rating reflects our commitment to improving and maintaining a high standard of cleanliness, hygiene, and food safety in our restaurant. “We would like to extend our gratitude to our dedicated staff who have consistently worked hard to ensure a safe and enjoyable dining experience for our valued customers. We are also grateful to our customers for their support. “Our updated rating will be published on the Food Standard Agency’s website within 35 days from 26th Jan 2024.”
Inspectors have slapped a 1-star food hygiene rating on Bahar Tandoori in Cowes after finding a myriad of issues, including out-of-date food, reheated rice, a dirty tea towel placed on top of dough and mould in the kitchen. Environmental Health inspectors visited the well-established High Street takeaway on 18th October and were immediately disappointed to find that standards were generally poor, and that many of the issues had been identified at previous inspections. In 2022, the tandorri restaurant was awarded a reputable score of 4. A big issue for officials was the discovery of rice that had been left in 2 large, deep containers at ambient temperatures of 24c-27c for around 4 hours, sparking fears of bacteria growth. It was also discovered that cooked rice had been reheated in the microwave for a delivery order and left on the hotplate for over 20 minutes. The temperature of the rice had gone down to 56c so would be flash fried/reheated again to be delivered hot to the customer. Other high-risk food including cooked meats were found to be left out at ambient temperatures for over 4 hours, which could have led to the growth of food poisoning bacteria. A dirty tea towel had been placed on top of dough, which could have posed a contamination risk. Further issues were discovered including 2 containers of raw prawns that had been left uncovered in a chest freezer, both of which had liquid in them which would have contained food poisoning bacteria. A small mincer, kept in a carrier bag, had evidence of dried raw meat inside. A container of paste with a best before date of December 2022 was located alongside a container of food dye dated April 2023, with an opened container of mint sauce stored at room temperature in the upstairs store room with a best before date of 7/21. Continued examination of the kitchen found a heavy build-up of food debris and dirt in the fridges and freezers, with evidence of mould growth on the seals. Food debris was also found in the microwave. Food containers are said to have been used for both raw and ready-to-eat food without adequate cleaning and disinfection in between. It was noted by inspectors that they could not be disinfected by heat as the business does not have a dishwasher. Council inspectors found the kitchen to be generally dirty, with a build up of grease at the base of extraction filters posing a fire risk. Old food was stuck to a green chopping board, which had been placed with clean chopping boards, and a small white chopping board was found to be stored on top of the mouldy seal behind the basin taps. Other issues included crates of peeled onions stored on the floor next to tins of paint, exposed bare wood that had absorbed grease and dirt and a can opener that was rusty and could no longer be kept clean. Bahar Tandoori – which has boasted about a visit from Richard Branston back in 1997 for over 25 years – has been warned that if contraventions are not addressed then the Isle of Wight Council will consider taking formal enforcement action. In 2010, Bahar Tandoori was fined £1,500 and ordered to pay £2,000 costs after being prosecuted for food hygiene offences by the Isle of Wight Council. Island Echo has approached Bahar Tandoori for a statement.

Unfortunately these establishments are only interested in making money at any cost.
They should be automatically closed down permanently especially when they didnt learn from
2010.
Excuse me while I spew! Dirty buggers.
Shut it down for good !!!!
If they have done this before they will do it again…..
Filthy dirty hovel…..
No excuse for filth ….
Lucky no one has been seriously ill …..
Or maybe they have and haven’t reported it….
Vote with your feet and wallet…..
But with any luck it will be permanently shut down ….
Especially if no one eats there ever again !!!!!!
I have noticed since the Pandemic many places have got filthier.
Some pubs are still serving up glasses with lipstick on and cutlery with
remnants of old food on them.
The Council needs to issue large fines and donate the money
to charity.
If they were taking to court last time ,y on earth did the inspectors take it further
Another Island filth hole.
Does anyone know a clean restaurant on the island
Lol
Should have been shut down immediately.
After reading that report why was the place not forced to close until all issues resolved
DIRTY BASTARDS!!! Should be shut down permanently
This food hygiene ratings are so overated,
ask the regular customers their opinions,
if it tastes good who cares what’s going on behind the kitchen doors!
“What doesn’t kill you make’s you stronger”
“What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” is a truly stupid saying.
Try telling that to the millions of people around the world who suffer from debilitating diseases.
They’ll be doing some cheap deals there now after this article. I can’t wait!
shut it down for good it’s always this type of place and i bet they don’t even wash there hands
How many illnesses has been linked to it??
Now you all know how bad this place is just boycott it and take your trade elsewhere, i think the council are being derelict in their duty by not immediately closing these sort of places at least until they can prove that the place has been brought back to a safe standard, they are a risk to public health.
Never had a bad meal there – better than the other two cesspits – one is just nasty and the other has tried to overcharge every time I have used it !!
Richard branston? Is he the bloke who makes the pickle?
Seems authentic Indian hygiene to me, well done
Well done for getting are great services out there to help idoits
It’s a bad bit of road with mud coming out onto it, the corner comes out of nowhere and is also in a 60 zone. I’d personally blame the bad weather conditions for this bc all it takes is one driver who doesn’t know the road to make that mistake and somethings clearly going on because it’s the 3rd crash I’ve seen In this place in the last few months
A strangely contradictory excuse, HK.Sixty mph is the limit not the target. If the person doesn’t know the road, they surely should be driving with heightened awareness. But it’s all the fault of the mud? Hmmm…
Absolutely!
Drivers should adjust according to the weather & their driving skills.
A lot of people can easily misjudge a corner, and whoever crashed was only in a fiat 500 so there clearly not boy/girl racers. Have you never crashed a day in your life and know how traumatic it is and then looking back on the comments to see people being rude when it’s not even there fault it’s just BAD WEATHER and a awful road, there’s no warning of the corner or anything and can be easily misjudged
Unless it was a Fiat 500 (595/695) Abarth
Then they shouldn’t be on the road. You drive to the conditions of the road looking ahead and paying close attention to the warning signage. If a licenced driver can’t understand that simple concept then they shouldn’t be on our roads.
Learn how to spell idiot before you start commenting calling people idiots because it’s clearly you who is the idiot, you can’t even spell it!
Whatever Kev! Now on way to you.
Forgive me, but your spelling and grammar leave much to be desired, and you’re quick to call others idiots?
Said the idiot who can’t even spell it.
Says the odd one one here who’s always slagging everyone off
It…. I spelt that right. Maybe look at your own grammar before criticising others. And if you can’t see your mistake than look harder and you might not be such an idiot after all your criticisms.
Kev, you’re not using the correct words here: ‘our’, not ‘are’; and please read (doubtful) your spelling before posting comments, eg idoits???? or is that a foreign language perhaps?
Let’s hope speed is not to blame.
I saw a Euro Car parts van driving through Godshill this afternoon driving
fast past The Griffin Pub, the High Street clearly states 20 mph but no one
Keeps to the speed limit on the island.
Hampshire Police should permanently place a speed van at one end of the
High Street in Godshill, that is the only way to stop speeding motorists
Godshill needs traffic calming measures. There is no proper pavement in some parts and drivers come at you like a bat out of Hell.
Even bus drivers and police go through Godshill like a bat out of hell, then cyclists are way over the speed limit, but of course they are allowed to do as they please….
More bloody old people. Stay of the roads.Use the bus.Thats what they are for.
Good to see that Yarmouth Fire Station got a mention , even as they only have 2 Firefighters.
People just dont drive to the conditions presented to them, if you dont know the
road then drive to a speed that you can react to anything that comes at you, it is
that simple.
The idiots don’t understand road conditions, they never have and never will…
Drive it like you stole it. Nice one.My damage rating will have to be a guesstimate of 3 out of 10.RUBBISH.
