An application to hold events near Ryde Marina all year round has been withdrawn due to local residents’ concerns.
Ryde Town Council (RTC) wanted a premises licence allowing them to play films, live and recorded music and hold dance performances, Monday to Sunday, 09:00 to 23:00, at Eastern Gardens 365 days a year.
The most recent event held at the site was Island’s got Talent earlier this month.
The application had been met with concern by some residents, however, who feared it could lead to an increase in noisy events. They said it would allow events to take place every day of the year until late at night, causing continued disturbances.
RTC had however tried to allay the uneasiness around the application and Eastern Gardens becoming a ’24/7 365-day party venue’ saying that was not the case.
Taking to social media, it said:
“If you are hoping for a local, responsible, inclusive and properly-managed approach to Eastern Gardens that takes into account local needs and creates a positive image then you are in luck.”
However, following a meeting between the town council and residents of The Strand, the application has been withdrawn.
RTC has not yet decided whether it will reapply for the licence.
A spokesperson for the council said they had been advised most of the activities they had planned for Eastern Gardens can go ahead without a premises licence.
The town council has recently taken on a 125-year lease of Eastern Gardens from the Isle of Wight Council. An update on the application is scheduled to be given at the next Ryde Town Council meeting on Monday (5th September).

Good. We need less noise pollution, not more.
I agree plato.
Every such event is just an excuse for benefit scroungers to get drunk, smoke dope, let their swarms of children run wild, and have their hideous tattooed ‘women’ mouthing off the most foul language to all in ear shot.
I would rather it was used as a dogs walking or even toilet area, at least animals know no better and we are not funding them to increase in numbers year on year.
Stupid RTC in even thinking this would go through. People need proper sleep to function. All RTC are thinking about is money, money, money, and if it got though they sure would be using it the full 365 days a year for that one purpose.
For once a correct decision.
Every event is just filled with drunken so called ‘on the breadline’ beings and their numerous children.
Litter and vandalised property traces their progress as they leave.
Well done for banning such events
What is it with the residents of Ryde?
They complain that the town is neglected etc, but, when proposals are advanced to try to encourage events and visitors they are all up in arms about noise etc., etc!
the Nimbys are out in force yet again.
The granting of the license would not have meant parties and noise 365 days of the year, it would have meant that events could be held more easily.
Just remember Objectors, when Ryde is a total ghost town, you will only have yourselves to blame!
What are you on about? It’s the druggies, crime, and ASB that residents complain about. And there’s lots of it to complain about.
Ryde has absolutely no chance of being a ghost town, it is over-populated already and is mad during the ever extending summer with more events than you can shake a stick at. Any respite during the low season is welcome.
Agree. Film and dancing has been healthy social events for decades. The residents of this island are killing it. Go ahead and take away every opportunity for people to socialise in a safe enviroment. People will find their own in less healthy environments and activities due to being utterly depressed at just existing.
What a miserable bunch of people that live in my town I hope that you all fester away while you are hiding in your little den and God forbid that you should ever get an ounce of fun in your lives
Good, glad it’s been withdrawn. Can you imagine the noise and the litter that would be left everywhere. The poor residents who live near to the gardens would go out of their minds with the noise.
Exactly, hardly a genteel afternoon at a bandstand.
Just crass, drunken, drugged, foulmouthed social kept broken families who think and now believe the world owes them, and their ever widely scattered charity paid for clones they will fill some dim womb with, a living.
Normal people have had enough pandering to the likes of it now.
Same OLD usual suspects trying there damnedest to destroy the Island.
Please could you retire somewhere else ?
Please could you keep your ageist comments to yourself, Alamo.
Over the last bank holiday we had music from the bowling alley, the castle and the eastern gardens all at full volume from 10 in the morning until 10 at night
LUCKY YOU ! Most people would have to pay a small fortune for that privilege.
How many ‘residents’ of The Strand actually live there? Apart from one hotel, not many, but the objections were overwhelming. Greedy non local landlords don’t want DFLs disturbed by local fun.
