Greek God ZeusWith the upcoming Olympics just days away, Year 3 teachers from St Mary’s and St Thomas’ Federated Primary Catholic Schools organised an Ancient Greek Olympics Day for their pupils at St Thomas’ in Newport. In a spirited recreation of the ancient games, the children competed in barefoot marathons, javelin throws, long jumps, and chariot races. The event was designed to be both educational and enjoyable, providing the young students with a hands-on learning experience about Ancient Greece and its Olympic traditions. Beyond the athletic competitions, the day included creative and cultural activities. The children crafted labyrinths for the Minotaur, made olive crowns, and ran a myth-off where they told Greek myths. The event not only brought history to life, but also fostered a sense of camaraderie among the students. It was a memorable day filled with learning, laughter, and new friendships, perfectly timed to celebrate the Olympic spirit as the world prepares for the Olympic Games in Paris. Javelin throwers Gosia Whitmore of St Mary’s Primary in Ryde said:
“The Greek Day was a great way to learn about the Ancient Olympics and Ancient Greece, but it was also an unforgettable experience and an opportunity for our children to make some new friends and have fun.”
Marathon running St Thomas’ teacher Clayre Brown added:
