Vectis Youth Rugby Club and Ryde’s Denbigh House Dental Practice teamed up to protect the teeth of local rugby players.
Dorana Stone and Johanna Thompson – a duo representing Denbigh House Dental Practice – recently volunteered their time and skills to set up a pitch-side pop-up dental clinic at a recent U13s training session, taking impressions to provide gum shields for the club in a drive to protect the children’s teeth and prevent any dental trauma incidents.
Dental trauma can be a harrowing and painful experience and a good gumshield can help to reduce the risk of this on anyone who plays a contact sport.
A Denbigh House spokesperson has said:
“We recognised that the purchasing of such an essential kit item can be an expensive and inaccessible luxury for some, but we wanted to ensure that the wonderful efforts provided by the volunteers at the club were supported.
“Whilst NHS dental practices like ours are stretched to the limit, we believe promoting prevention is key- whether it be a good gum shield to prevent trauma , or a good diet and brushing regime to prevent decay and gum disease, it will all help to take the strain off the system and keep people healthy and happy. We want to help the local community and are always working hard and doing our best to keep the Island smiling.”
The gumshields were made by Joshua March of Ed Day’s Denbigh House and Nick and Stuart Jones of C and K Labs.
