Aldi has, for the first time, officially confirmed it will be opening a brand new supermarket in Newport – and recruitment is underway.
Britain’s cheapest supermarket, which already operates more than 1,080 stores nationwide, including in Lake and Cowes, is hiring for a wide range of store positions.
In total, 32 colleagues are being sought on the Isle of Wight this year, including both full-time and part-time positions such as store assistants and cleaners, all the way up to store managers.
Aldi is set to open its third Isle of Wight supermarket at the new St George’s Retail Park on the southern fringes of Newport.

As previously reported by Island Echo, construction of the new retail offering – which will include McDonald’s and Costa drive-thrus – is well underway.
Aldi has also submitted a planning application for a new store on Brading Road in Ryde.
Kelly Stokes, Recruitment Director at Aldi UK, said:
“We want to encourage more people across the UK to consider a career in retail, starting with high-quality training and development that gives people the skills and confidence to succeed.
“As we open more stores, we’re creating more opportunities for people to start to build rewarding careers with Aldi. With market-leading pay, clear progression routes and ongoing support, we’re helping more people grow in retail while bringing Aldi’s award-winning, affordable products to more local communities.”

I wonder what “skills” are on offer. I used to fill supermarket shelves after school for pocket money under the management of “Mr Coysh” (don’t know if the spelling is right) Can anyone quess which supermarket it was? I’ll reveal it tomorrow. Not really a supermarket but more of a big grocery, no parking and in Cowes.
Liptons
They could have done a public consultation. What a waste of valuable space and resources when we could have had something we needed there.
Like another fast food takeaway?
For the fat fat fatty faties…
I’m not sure of your point. The development was not built around Aldi, the plans were available for any company to make an offer on, just as the 2 drive through were open to offers. A public consultation over what goes where would lock out a number of businesses and could prevent the whole process getting finance. On top of that, can you imagine the farce that would follow the council trying to set up any kind of consultation, remember Boaty McBoat face?
Good.
Would much rather had a Lidl – as the current Lidl in Newport is not large enough and the car park is not big enough at busy times
Interesting, only 32 positions offered. MacDonald’s in Cowes was offering 120 positions. Go figure.
What a complete waste of land. We don’t need this crap.
The reason Aldi and Lidl are successful
THEY DON’T EMPLOY SHIRKERS
they employ a very little workforce and pay
decent wages, unlike Tesco etc who employ
too many employees.
The reason they are doing well is that the isle of wight is happy to put up with cheap and low quality products
WOW.. a low opinion of Islanders much?? Yes, the prices are lower than most, but the quality of most products is the same or better. IF you’re willing to check, rather than chucking stuff into a trolley, you can remove any sub-standard items. We often buy a beef joint, after checking for one with as little gristle etc. I then trim the joint and we have meat as good as any supermarket at a much lower price. Steaks are mostly 30-36 day dry matured, and not bright red almost with a pulse like the other shops and per kilo is lower than the others. Paying more for produce does not improve the quality, just shows a lack of knowledge.
Very true. They work bloody hard for a decent wage and all seem to be more than happy with their lot. Compare Aldi/Lidl staff with Tesco or Asda or Morrisons and you can see the workers, versus the shirkers.
