Aldi has formally submitted its planning application to the Isle of Wight Council for a new supermarket on Brading Road in Ryde.
The proposals outline the demolition of the vacant Neutrik building off Cothey Way to make way for a purpose-built Aldi supermarket.
The supermarket revealed its intention to open in Ryde last month, as previously reported by Island Echo.
The single-storey store will have a gross internal floor area of 1,912 sqm and offer 114 customer parking spaces, including 12 equipped with electric vehicle charging facilities. Plans also include secure cycle parking, landscaped areas and improved pedestrian links to Brading Road.
A new left-in, left-out access from Brading Road is proposed alongside the retention of the existing entrance from Cothey Way to improve traffic flow – although local businesses on the estate have raised an eyebrow over whether the existing access is suitable for such a large volume of continious traffic.
According to the application, the store is set to open from 08:00 to 22:00 Monday to Saturday, with reduced hours of 10:00 to 16:00 on Sundays and bank holidays. Deliveries are planned outside peak trading times to minimise disruption to local roads.

Supporting transport assessments suggest that the development would have only a minor impact on the surrounding highway network, while also highlighting the site’s accessibility by foot, cycle and public transport.
Aldi’s planning submission follows a 2-week public consultation held in June, which gathered 853 responses, with almost 93% of participants expressing support. Feedback highlighted the benefits of increased shopping choice and the creation of new jobs, although a small number of residents raised concerns about traffic and noise.
The company says the store will complement rather than compete with existing retailers, noting that its limited product range and lack of in-store concessions distinguish it from traditional supermarkets.
Developers believe the scheme will deliver economic benefits and contribute to sustainable growth, in line with local and national planning policies.
The Isle of Wight Council will now assess the application, with a decision expected in October.

So 93% of those surveyed won’t be supporting the few remaining shops that are left.
How is this shop not going to compete but compliment the existing shops? Can we have the details of that publicity statement?
More shops will close down when Aldi arrive.
I am surprised Tesco are not using their power
to block the move.
Every little helps!
Lol
Probably because tesco have no power ya numpty
Good idea. All sounds reasonable. Is this the store that has the bargain bins down the centre of the store? I bought a sander from one of there stores years ago, it’s still working.
Great another soul less supermarket. Why don’t we just turn the Isle of Wight into one big shopping mall.
It’s becoming that way, personally I prefer the
smaller stores, sadly there are not many remaining.
Traffic is going to be a nightmare bad enough with the traffic trying to get into mc Donald’s
My thoughts exactly, but the island does not understand
traffic control.
May I suggest that all the Islands so called
Highways dept and Island Roads etc.
All take a visit to the mainland and attend courses in
how to control traffic safely!
The island always makes me laugh, every organisation
on the island is run by cowboys, some small privately
owned businesses are run well, but the large ones
are a joke.
The truth hurts.
Great idea, but “NO” Numpty controls the traffic
going into McDonald’s, for years it’s been a disaster
waiting to happen.
Why why why can’t the Numpty council control
traffic, it makes me wonder if they want accidents
too happen!
If something is not done about improving the infrastructure
it will be a complete disaster.
This is fantastic news for the people of Ryde. We’ve needed this for so long. So glad it’s aldi and not lidl. Aldi is so much higher class than Lidl
Can’t wait for it to open, it’s a shame about little businesses but unfortunately a lot of them don’t have the amount of stock most people want to buy you can’t do a full shop in them, also they charge a lot more, people are trying to save money these days. Aldi has some brilliant offers on.
