2 kittens thought to be just days old are being hand-reared after they were discovered abandoned in a box on the Cowes-Newport cycle track.
Friends of the Animals was contacted by staff at The Veterinary Hospital on Riverway yesterday (Sunday) after a member of the public came across the tiny kittens.
The pair, who have since been named Scooter and Vespa by veterinary staff, were found suffering from fleas, while one also had a problem with its eye.
They were given a syringe feed at the vets before Friends of the Animals stepped in to help, with an experienced volunteer now taking on the task of hand-rearing them.
However, the Isle of Wight charity is concerned about the whereabouts and welfare of the kittens’ mother, as well as the possibility that there could be other kittens needing help in the area.
A spokesperson for Friends of the Animals has said:
“We are concerned for the mum of these kittens and if there are any others that may need rescuing.

“Fleas will kill kittens and these are not the first we have rescued in this state. We can only say again, please have your cat spayed and males neutered. We can help towards the cost.”
The discovery came at the end of a busy day for the charity, which had earlier been called to reports of a young fox in Newport.
The animal had dragged itself up a driveway and into a homeowner’s porch, but sadly died before volunteers arrived.
