Thames Valley Air Ambulance has joined local medics and firefighters in the Luccombe area of Shanklin this morning (Thursday) where a operation is underway to remove an unwell patient from a property.
Firefighters are working with ambulance colleagues and the flying doctors of the air ambulance to safely evacuate the patient from the top floor of the block of flats on Popham Road.
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has 2 fire appliances from Ryde and Shanklin and an aerial ladder platform on scene, with the aerial platform being used to remove the patient through a small window.
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service has deployed a paramedic crew, a rapid response paramedic, an operational commander and a senior officer.
Police are also involved in the operation as they have created a safe space for the Thames Valley Air Ambulance to land at the nearby Big Mead park.
The incident began at around 08:00 this morning and remains ongoing at this time.

UPDATE – A male has been successfully removed from the 3rd floor and transferred into an awaiting ambulance for onward conveyance to St Mary’s Hospital.
The air ambulance has left the scene and relocated to St Mary’s helipad.
The incident has been brought to a close and all roads have re-opened.

Obviously not. These people are dedicated professionals who put patient care first and the circumstances, what ever they may have been, dictate the extraction method used, in this case, it seems this was the safest way to bring the patient out of the building. Well done to the crews involved.

I think if I were to be running a new site I would not report on these stories out of respect for the persons involved. The comments below are a good demonstration of why.
