A Shanklin man who was upset after losing his bus pass went on to damage nearly £500 worth of fire safety equipment. Terence Perkins, 38, of Orchardleigh Road in Shanklin, pleaded guilty to criminal damage to property under £5,000 when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court. As previously reported by Island Echo, officers from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary were called just after 14:00 on 6th December 2023 to a disturbance at an address at a block of flats on Orchardleigh Road. At the scene, a drunk Perkins had damaged a fire door and fire alarm casing, the damage has been valued at around £486. Defending, Michael McGoldrick told the court that Perkins’ actions were impulsive and spurred on by his alcohol consumption and that Perkins was in a bad mood on the day in question after losing his bus pass. The 38-year-old is currently completing requirements for an existing community order for which he was handed in August this year. Perkins was handed an £80 fine and ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £32 victim surcharge fee. No compensation was awarded after Perkins told the court he was paying for the damage through his housing provider, Southern Housing.

£97 pay back for a crime that cost £486 mmmm sound about right for our courts wtf is happening to the system with softy softy no deterrent system ,laughable
Sounds like a bargain to me cause £500 worth of damage and only get a fine of £197. Why not fine him £500?
Paying through is housing provider? No, paying from the benefits he gets so in fact it is the public who are paying!
£80 fine for causing £500 of damage! Where’s the logic in that!! Ridiculous.
“No compensation was awarded after Perkins told the court he was paying for the damage through his housing provider, Southern Housing” or to put it another way, we are paying the compensation through his benefits !
The Southern Housing Group will house any piece of litter these days. Most of the arrests made nowadays are in or outside one of their properties. Due to them agreeing to house the dregs a mainland housing group don’t want. Although this waister is an islander, he’s still a waister nonetheless. 38 years old & still throwing a tantrum because he couldn’t remember where he put his bus pass, by attacking a fire door. Grow up & get a job. Do something to make your parents proud for once in your life.
Did Perkins ever find the elusive bus pass?
Effectively the courts are subsidising his activity, how ridiculous. No need to worry how much damage you do, you’ll only have to pay a fraction of it.
however long it takes people should have to fully pay for there actions; they they might give more consideration if was going to really cost them,
should be other deterrents added like curfew or lost driving licence. Time again we see reoffending, there obviously no d effective deterrent. Where did the eye for an eye change to eye for an eyelash?.
