Motorists are reminded that a major project to replace the entire deck of Yarmouth Bridge will begin on Monday (23rd September).
The work is scheduled to last up to 8 weeks during which the structure will be closed to road traffic at all times with the usual diversion via Wilmingham Lane and The Middle Road in place.
Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout work and cyclists too will still be able to use the bridge during work as long as they dismount. Island Roads has also worked with the harbour commission to minimise disruption to river traffic.
It will be the first time the deck has been replaced in its entirely since 2009.
Island Roads has produced a short film explaining the work and which features aerial footage of the bridge in operation…
The work has been planned for outside the main holiday season to minimise inconvenience but also at a time of year when there is a reasonable chance of mild weather which is helpful to the performance of some of the materials being used.
At 90m long, Yarmouth Bridge is the Island’s second largest bridge. It is a 7-span structure comprising of steel main beams with composite timber decking.
The highly durable new decking system is the same as that used to re-deck London’s Tower Bridge.

Do you think Island Roads could have a word with southern Vectis as not having a bus for 8 weeks serving serving a good proportion of West Wight is a bit more than an inconvenience.
I shouldn’t think the Norton Grange guests who often book holidays there will be too impressed when they arrive and realise no bus route past the holiday site.
Yes, it has to be done but 8 weeks?
