Police are working to identify an individual who attempted to break into a family home in Binstead on Tuesday – an incident that is being linked to a series of burglaries on the Island in recent weeks.
Officers have been conducting enquiries into the alarming incident, which is said to have occurred on The Mall sometime between 10:00-13:30 yesterday morning.
Thankfully, no entry was gained and nothing was taken but Police have revealed a 2ft metal pole was left at the scene. It’s thought that the pole, which has now been seized, was used by the suspect in an attempt to gain entry. Fingerprint analysis is underway.
Island Echo understands the pole was placed through a window in an attempt to turn the door handle on the inside, but the efforts were hindered as the door was locked.
Hampshire Constabulary say they are linking this attempted burglary with a series of burglaries in the Newport and Ryde areas, as previously reported by Island Echo.
A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary has said:
“We want to take this opportunity to encourage residents to do what they can to keep their properties secure. For full details on the ways in which you can strengthen the security of your property, visit our website at https://www.hampshire.police.uk/cp/crime-prevention/.”
Anyone who was in the area at the time and may have seen the incident, or who may have seen someone carrying a 2ft metal pole in the vicinity, is asked to call Police on 101, quoting 44220074030. Similarly, anyone who may have CCTV, dashcam or doorbell footage should contact officers.

Shame, I grew up in Binstead, as a child, sneaking into the school field to play football was as bad as Binstead was. PC Bassett knew everyone in the village. A much simpler and happier time before the village was swallowed up by housing.
,We need a current PC Bassett. Why have the Police become so remote and out of touch now ?
Any politician seeking to re-establish the old community policing and introduce tougher sentencing would surely gain strong support from voters.
Coincides with half term so the feral scum will be on the loose again, knowing full well that if by the minor chance they end up in court the usual liberal half wit judiciary will let them off with a caution .it’s just the way it is,depressing.
And you know the age how? I am sure the other “linked”burglary’s were in term time….please shove your prejudices where “the sun don’t shine”have a nice day now
Hmm,anger issues.
