Police on the Isle of Wight are asking locals to keep an eye out for elderly neighbours, friends and relatives as they investigate a series of burglaries that have seen jewellery and money stolen from people’s homes.
A total of 7 burglaries have been reported in Ryde, Newport, Nettlestone and Seaview between 17th January and 6th February, with further reports of suspicious activity in the Nettlestone and Ryde areas.
All of the burglaries are being treated as potentially linked.
A number of the incidents have seen elderly homeowners targeted, with properties accessed through insecure windows or unlocked doors and money stolen from within.
During a burglary at an address in Carisbrooke, on 17th January, a large amount of jewellery was taken including necklaces, rings, earrings, and pocket watches. Photographs of some of the stolen items have been released in a bid to help locate the jewellery.
Has someone tried to sell them to you, or any items of jewellery in unusual circumstances? Do you work in a pawn shop, or have you seen them for sale online or on social media?
Police would like to hear from anyone who has witnessed any suspicious people or vehicles in their neighbourhood. Anyone with information about these incidents or the stolen items is asked to contact police on 101, quoting 44220026291 You can also submit information to us about this investigation online at https://www.hampshire.police.uk/tua/tell-us-about/cor/tell-us-about-existing-case-report/.

pity we can’t use the Saudi method of dealing with these filth thieves and cut their hands off.
Yes everyone make sure windows & doors are secured. The impact of a burglary is devastating but especially when someone elderly is targeted. They tend to worry more & start feeling vulnerable which then has such an impact on their lives. I know this from experience as my parents came home to find their house ‘turned over’ & my mum seemed to cope well initially but it ate away at her & caused her anxiety & depression & contributed to her death. The low life’s who do this need to be punished properly & dont say they’ve got mental health issues, that excuse is wearing thin.
Burglars are up there (or down there) with pedophiles and rapists if you ask me – their crimes can have similar impact on their victims and also target the vulnerable. Sickening people. Hope they get caught swiftly.
Everyone needs to get involved, watching out for our neighbours, if you see anything
report it if possible get your phone / camera out get a photo if possible. Don’t approach just observe, take notes and help the police. No point in moaning that they
don’t do anything if they have the information they will do something, support them
and we all become winners
I wish I could agree with you but the reality is that the police are simply not interested and don’t investigate. I witnessed a hit and run, gave the police the vehicle details including the registration number along with the names and contact numbers of several other witnesses. I received a letter from them a few weeks later saying that they were closing the case as “it did not meet their criteria for investigation”. Absolutely disgusting. I would never waste my time reporting anything to these chocolate teapots again.
Quite, myself and other residents have repeatedly reported drug running youths on very noisy motorbikes brazenly plying their trade around our area.
– Nothing is ever done, they have not been challenged even once, all our efforts reporting this has been wasted.
Unfortunately the Police are disinterested – so now we have a village frequently stinking of the weed, some children have become drug users and there is an atmosphere of lawlessness. The youths involved are violent and some of us locals have experienced assault when challenging them.
We have all given up on reporting this constant menace – it’s just a waste of effort. Surely the Police are partly culpable for the crimes which eminate from the spread of drug use and addiction.
However in the absence of a Harry Brown type character – what can we do ?
At a guess i would say it’s a mainland gang operation as unfortunately the island is seen as easy pickings. If you go to the mainland every house has an alarm on it. the island probably has one in a thousand homes with alarms
We were burgled by an island born and bred and from a supposedly “nice” family , In a nice area,I beg to differ. It wasn’t his first offence or his last , the judges need a reality check and the criminals need a stint in a prison and maybe they’ll have an idea of what being scared and vulnerable feels like !
