A 28-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy have been arrested on suspicion of attempted rape following an alleged attack in woodland in St Lawrence earlier this morning (Wednesday).
Police flooded the area shortly before 10:00 after receiving a report that a female had been assaulted in woods between Undercliff Drive and Hunts Road.
An hour-long search of the area has led to a 28-year-old male and a teenage boy being arrested in the vicinity of Undercliff Drive. They have been taken into custody at Newport Police Station for questioning.
Hampshire Constabulary say that the woman did not sustain any serious injuries in the incident.
Cordons have been established in the area and forensic investigators are expected to conduct an examination of the scene later today.
A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary has said:
“Enquiries into the circumstances remain ongoing, and residents can expect to see increased police activity in this area as we conduct our investigation.
“If you have any concerns or information that can assist us, do not hesitate to approach our officers in the area, or contact us on 101”.

Poor girl hope she’s ok. She may not have sustained any physical injuries but you can bet there is mental injury. I do wish incidences like this were not so dismissed as having no obvious injuries. There will be probable PTSD and I really hope the perpetrators don’t just get a slap on the wrist!
That’s exactly the point T – in our current system there is so much weight given to the perpetrator’s ‘mitigating circumstances’, leading to a culture of very light sentencing. Yet the victim’s are the ones who have to bear the trauma for the rest of their lives – this is often treated so lightly..
Later the victim’s may encounter them on the street – how disturbing that can be.
When will politicians get themselves ‘in synch’ with the rest of us and deal effectively with the growth of crime against women and girls, as well as drug related crimes ?
People want to see action taken, our more vulnerable ones need protection.
