A 38-year-old East Cowes woman caught drug driving on her way to get some cat food from a local pet shop has been handed a 13-month driving ban.
Cheryl-Dawn Chiverton, of Vectis Road, admitted drug driving (cannabis) when she appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court earlier this week (Tuesday 14th January).
Prosecuting, Munayah Hassan, told the court that on the 13th August, Police on patrol on Medina Way in Newport were drawn to an Audi being driven by Chiverton after they received reports that she may have been driving under the influence of cannabis.
Having pulled Chiverton over, she admitted that she had indeed smoked a cannabis joint that morning. A roadside drugs wipe confirmed this as did a further test conducted at Newport Police Station.
Defending Chiverton, Oscar Vincent told the court that his client – who has no previous convictions or cautions to her name – had resorted to smoking cannabis after discovering that her then-partner had been cheating on her with a woman she knew very well.
Magistrates handed Chiverton a 13-month driving ban and ordered she pay a fine of £120. She was also ordered to pay costs of £85 and £48 surcharge fee.

Wear, wear, EIE? You may be incapable of rational thought, but at least try and get a grip on the basics of our language.
The court should have made an order for the vehicle to be crushed. This should be part of the Drink/Driving punishment. If they don’t like it, DO NOT drink and drive, SIMPLES.
