A new charge of £1 for a return crossing on the Cowes Floating Bridge is to come into force today (Wednesday).
Foot passengers travelling across the River Medina will now have to pay £1 for a return crossing, a rise of 60p from the lesser charge of 40p that was introduced in July last year. Before that the crossing was free for foot passengers.
In addition, those who have previously travelled for free using a concessionary bus pass will not also have to pay the full rate.
A discount of up to 30% is available for saver card holders, bringing the price of a return crossing down to 70p. To take advantage of this lower fare passengers must purchase a saver card from the Cowes ticket office at a cost of £2, before then registering the card online and topping it up with credit.
No changes are being made to vehicle fares, however saver card holders will be eligible for a £2 return fare.
A new £3.2million floating bridge is due to be delivered this coming Winter and is expected to last at least 25 years.
