Firefighters are tackling another van fire in East Cowes tonight (Monday) – prompting fears that the serial arsonist has returned to the town.
A Ford transit has been severely damaged by a blaze that has broken out in a private car park at the top of Victoria Grove.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service was alerted at around 20:45, with 1 appliance from East Cowes mobilised to the scene.
The quick actions of the retained crew have prevented the fire from destroying the whole vehicle, as well as stopping the flames taking hold of nearby trees and the historic shed which belonged to Christopher Cockerell – the inventor of the Hovercraft.
No persons have been injured but there will be significant impact on the van owner and his business.
Tonight’s incident comes following a period of calm in East Cowes after a number of arson attacks on commercial vehicles earlier this year.
A cause has not yet been established, but Police will undoubtably be alerted to this latest fire.
Firefighters remain on scene and have gained entry to the van to damp down the contents of the rear compartment.

Known the owner for years …wouldnt hurt a fly ,lovely bloke ,and works his ass off at his cleaning buisness ….hopefully the culprit will be caught this time ….
Pointless the Police catching it, what would be best is for the owner of any burnt vehicle to have a spade and bring it down on the arsonists spine.
Harder to torch things from a wheelchair.
Very trie.
The Law could not catch a cold.
Bring back local Bobby’s on the beat, that way they get to know whats going on
in the community.
Let’s hope some neighbours have Ring doorbells. Needs catching. Taken away a man’s livelihood.
Likely the culprit is getting its rent, c.tax and benefits paid from taxes of those peoples vans it burns.
But the courts are so weak as our jails full of global crims no chance it will get a realistic sentence so I agree with the maggot.
Plot twist, The police are behind this is a means to get extra funding.
East Cowes is the Pits.
I feel sorry for the Holidaymakers arriving on the Island
I could not think of a worse place to see on arrival.
Why Waitrose ever opened in East Cowes is beyond me,
they should have gone to Specsavers.
Good enough for the queen to build a house there.
If it was that good why don’t the current Royal Family don’t live there!
They are better off in classy Windsor.
I suppose you live in windsor do you Trevor…?
No I don’t Duane . I don’t live in East Cowes either.
I wouldn’t live in East Cowes Rent Free!, too much bad press.
Queen Elizabeth lived in London, does not mean I would want to live in London.
They could live in Sandown, it would not improve the location.
I could not agree less with this… plenty of regeneration going on in East Cowes. Look at the investment in housing, the business and exmployment that has been created is huge.
East Cowes is up and coming.
You’re either trying to trigger people with this comment, or you are uneducated.
They can keep building new homes, it will not change an area.
If scum live in the area, how will it change.
All it means is that East Cowes will have a mix of wealth and that never works.
Waitrose probably chose East Cowes on the back of some very fulsome promises about regeneration and integration with West Cowes, and while it was relatively cheap.
I’m sure they’re regretting it now, no fault of East Cowes, of course.
I somehow doubt they are regretting it. Its my local and its always busy.
Is it safe to park a vehicle in East Cowes thesedays.
The historic shed has been allowed for years to slowly but surely achieve a state of dereliction. Shame on GKN and our local council for allowing this. Cockerel must be turning in his grave.
A valuable building plot for Captiva to use their symbiotic relationship with the IW council to enrichen them both soon then I expect.
As there has been a lull in van fires since winter maybe the police ought to be looking for someone having just done six months in prison.
