Sainsbury’s in Newport has completed a major 18-week refurbishment programme, unveiling a modern new look designed to improve the shopping experience for customers across the Isle of Wight.
The extensive transformation has seen significant investment into the Foxes Road supermarket, including the installation of new refrigeration systems, refreshed shelving, updated branding and the introduction of more than 1,400 new product lines.
The works, which began back in January, mark the latest major investment into the store since it first opened in April 1999. The supermarket previously underwent a refit in 2011.
Staff involved in the relaunch have described the project as a ‘full reset’, aimed at creating a brighter, cleaner and more efficient environment for both customers and colleagues.
As part of the relaunch celebrations, colleagues were recently treated to canapés prepared by Robert Thompson MBE, the Isle of Wight chef known for becoming Britain’s youngest chef to receive 2 Michelin stars. Staff also received personalised pens to commemorate the occasion.
The reopening also involved the wider community, with Newport CE Primary School contributing artwork for a community bag handed out to shoppers last Friday (15th May).
During the works, shoppers will have noticed major structural changes taking place throughout the store, including the replacement of refrigeration units and large-scale re-merchandising designed to improve the customer journey.
According to those involved in the project, the investment also included new CO₂ refrigeration systems and energy-efficient cabinets to support Sainsbury’s sustainability goals.
The revamped store has now fully reopened to customers.

Perfect, well done team
Wonderful News! I’ve already booked my ferry and can’t wait to taste the difference through my eyeballs.
see you soon,
Paul.
Looks like they’ve just filled the place with facial recognition cameras
Maybe they should take control of our roads and
install speed cameras
Speeding is rife on the island yet the authorities cannot see it!
The island needs a Sadiq Khan, he knows how to slow motorists
down.
Lol
Improve the customer journey?
You use it to buy food, it’s not a cathedral!
It’s fine. Everyone is wondering around like lost souls unable to find anything but we’ll soon get used to it
Does the refit include removing humans from the tills and replacing them with ‘self-service’?
I always find I’ve set off the alarms when I’ve used a self-service till. I hate them as I get interrogated while our cultural enrichment visitors help themselves to anything and walk out without paying; they never get stopped.
