An inquest has been opened into the death of an Isle of Wight man who died in hospital last year after being hit by a car on New Year’s Eve in.
The inquest into the death of 48-year-old Jason John Nicholls – known as Jay – was opened at the Isle of Wight Coroner’s Court earlier today (Thursday).
Police were called at 17:17 on 31st December 2024 to a report of a collision on the roundabout junction of Avenue Road, High Street and Culver Parade, involving a grey Nissan Qashqai and a pedestrian.
Nicholls, of Fitzroy Street in Sandown, suffered serious injuries and was taken to Southampton General Hospital after being stabilised at the scene.
Sadly, despite the best efforts of medical professionals, Jay’s condition deteriorated and he passed away on the 15th January 2025.
A 73-year-old man from Brading was arrested at the time of the incident on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He was later released under investigation.
Police have since confirmed that they are still investigating the incident.
Just this week – more than 16-months after his death – a post-mortem examination carried out by Dr Amanda Jeffery concluded that Mr Nicholls died as a result of a head injury.
HM Senior Coroner Caroline Sumeray adjourned the inquest until the provisional date of 27th November.
Ms Sumeray offered condolences to Jay’s family.
