A 73-year-old man has been arrested and questioned on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving after a man was run over and seriously injured in Sandown yesterday evening (New Year’s Eve).
It was just before 17:20 that emergency services received reports of a pedestrian being run over on the roundabout at the junction of Avenue Road, High Street and Culver Parade, as first reported by Island Echo. This followed earlier reports of a drunken male running in and out of the traffic nearby.
It is understood that a grey Nissan Qashqai travelled up from the Esplanade and across the roundabout, striking a pedestrian that was reportedly in the middle of the road. The car then turned around and parked on Avenue Road.
The pedestrian, a man in his 40’s, suffered serious injuries as a result of the collision. He was taken directly to St Mary’s Hospital but was later airlifted to Southampton General Hospital by the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance. He remains in a serious condition this morning.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed that a 73-year-old man from Brading has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He has been released under investigation while further enquiries are carried out.
Police would like to speak to anyone who witnessed this collision, and in particular anyone who saw the pedestrian at the roundabout prior to the collision. If you have information, call 101 quoting reference 44240566663.

Was the driver doing 80 across the roundabout then ?
Just wait for all the comments about young drivers
Disrespectful comment. It’s reported a drunk was stumbling in and out of traffic. It could have been any age driver that had the misfortune to have a drunk appear on their bonnet!! Very sad for the injured person andI hope they recover BUT also, no doubt, very traumatic for the driver. Best wishes to all.
Agreed, reading the available information it would seem that the driver could well be an unwitting participant in this event! and the term ‘mowed down’ in the headline is somewhat unfortunate given the recent events in the German Christmas market!
Why do you say that.?
Were you born a cretin or do you practice every day because you are really good at it.
Nothing to do with old farts. The problem was a piss head being off his face on free handouts running in front of cars. How was this an old farts fault?
So , was the injured pedestrian the drunken one from earlier in the evening ?
Unfortunatly now always driver to legally be at fault even if the pedestrian is the actual one reasonably at fault. Its what we have to pay for living in a forever increasingly snowflake world.
