Firefighters from Ryde and Newport responded to a bin lorry fire in Ryde this morning (Tuesday).
2 appliances from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were mobilised to West Street just before 10:00.
Crews arrived on scene to find that a small fire had broken out in the rear compartment of a recycling refuse vehicle, which was first spotted by Amey waste collectors working from the vehicle.
The road was closed for a time but soon re-opened when the fire was extinguished.
The lorry was followed back to Lynnbottom Tip at Downend by a fire engine – just in case.
The source of the fire is unknown.
All of these single use plastic disposable e-cigs. They will still have charge left in them when they get piled into the bin.

Should be part and parcel of the kit re safety and due diligence….

They do carry one. However, if its larger than 1m on a side they are legally required to call 999 for assistance .
