A young woman is now in the care of the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service after being rescued from rough seas at Sandown seafront this morning (Sunday).
Shortly before 09:00, emergency services were alerted to an individual in distress just off the Sandown to Shanklin revetment.
Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team were mobilised to the incident alongside the volunteer crew of Sandown & Shanklin Independent Lifeboat. An ambulance and rapid response paramedic were also deployed.
Members of the public say the woman had entered the water intentionally.
The casualty is now being blue lighted to St Mary’s Hospital for further treatment and assessment.
Coastal rescue teams are now standing down from the incident.
Bloody hell. Entering the water intentionally. For a swim or the ‘other’ reason?
Glad she was rescued. The RNLI volunteers do an absolutely fantastic job. Well done.
I believe she was rescued by Sandown and Shanklin independent lifeboat, not an RNLI one. However, the crew are also volunteers, so well done to them.
They are not the RNLI they are an Independent Lifeboat and are grateful for any donations given to them by the public.
Agree they do however Sandown & Shanklin Lifeboat is Independent and nothing to do with the RNLI.
Hope she ok ,but why enter the water when its rough and putting yourself at risk and other people
Probably part of that wild swimming
If anyone is interested THIS is what really happened. The young lady in question was sat on the lower part of the Sandown/Shanklin lifeboat slipway. With heavy seas pounding in on the high tide the water was crashing over her and in our opinion could have dragged her in and out to sea. My wife coaxed the young lady to the top of the sea wall where we tried to keep her warm until rescue services were alerted by another helpful member of the public kindly using his mobile phone. The young lady was freezing cold and was unable to speak to anyone during this time. We just hope that she has recovered and receives the help she obviously needs.
Well done, I am sure the lady was very grateful for your actions. Not rescued by any lifeboat then.
No, that is correct. Thanks for your concern.
