A woman in her 50s has claimed she was ‘spiked’ during a night out in Cowes at the weekend, but Police say there is no evidence at this stage that a crime has been committed.
According to reports, the woman enjoyed a night out on the town but became unwell over the weekend. It is said that her organs started to shut down as a result of the alleged spiking, which is thought to have taken place in a pub.
The woman is said to still be in a bad way today (Tuesday).
The incident has been reported to Police but officers say no crime has been identified at this time.
A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary says:
“We would always advise anyone who suspects they have been spiked to seek medical attention at the earliest opportunity, and if there is any evidence captured to suggest a crime has been committed we will of course investigate this.
“There is no such evidence in relation to this most recent allegation that we are aware of.
“Our Licensing team proactively work with pubs and clubs on the Island to ensure training and practices are up to date, and we will continue to do this”.
Anyone who witnesses suspicious activity in licensed premises should report this to Police on 101.
Rumours have been circulating locally that a young woman died at the weekend as a result of spiking. Police say that there are currently no deaths being investigated that relate to drink spiking.
Advice for those thinking of going out drinking
• Firstly and most importantly of all, if you are out in a group – look after each other
• Don’t leave your drinks unattended. Carry them with you when dancing and take turns to go to the toilet
• Be wary of accepting drinks from strangers – if you have a drink bought for you, make sure you take it directly from the bar staff
• Keep an eye out for anyone in your group who appears more drunk than the amount of alcohol they have consumed would warrant – we all know our reaction to alcohol and if you or they feel ill or drunker than expected, your drink may have been tampered with – raise the alarm to someone straight away and head home.

Why the reference to the woman’s age? How is it relevant? Whatever her age, it should be reported to the venue where the drink was spiked. Behind the bar you see most things that are going on, and if a venue is home to this crime, they should keep reports and know to be vigilant and report that they’ve had several incidents. No point in reporting it directly to the police, they absolutely won’t be bothered to investigate. And if someone were caught, they’d be let off. We already know the Island is home to all sorts because there’s little chance of being caught or punished here. No protection for women, children and the vulnerable.
Probably ageism
That and Cowes is Cougar central.
Where I go when I want a bit of action with a woman twice my age 😉
allegedly spiked please steph – it hasn’t been confirmed one way or the other as yet. The police have not been able to identify if any crime as actually taken place yet – could be a different reason and the person involved just thinks it could have been something put in her drink.
perhaps if the police didn’t have to spend so much time dealing with whining snowflakes that get called names or have to deal with imbeciles that like to glue theirselves to doors in protest at something, then the police would be able to devote more time to investigating more serious matters.
Many older women are easy prey for a ‘certain easily to spot’ type.
They usually hang around in small groups, watching for prey. They will flatter the older women, and if they don’t agree to go back with them, then spike the drinks.
May need a good CTV camera in darker bars to identify these vile beings.
“the woman enjoyed a night out on the town… became unwell over the weekend… as a result of . alleged spiking, .. thought to have taken place in a pub.”
Police say ““There is no … evidence in relation to this … allegation that we are aware of.”
isn’t this all a bit vague to report as ‘News’,… Rumour, or gossip more like.
I had a bad stomach last week,.. but I had been to a well-known local restaurant a few days before…
Headline: “Isle of Wight resident gets food poisoning at local restaurant”
This story is based on Facebook hearsay. No evidence of anything.
There are filth that will do this
Did happen to a friend of mine police said something similar unable to prove anything.
Shame if ladies on a night out have to have beer matts protecting their drinks all evening
The problem with GHB is that it is ‘flushed’ out of your system leaving no detectable trace after 12 hours. If one suspects being spiked, they have little time in which to get proof. A day later is too late and it may well take a day to recover your senses and to take action.
Ageism, misogyny.
Wonder what would happen if the situation were reversed?
Sounds like she is not well, hope she gets better.
One question, if you were to spike a drink, would you not want it to act with in an hour, not the next day?
Did a young woman actually die tho?
Terrible if so that they’ve thrown it in last minute.
