William Hill bookmakers in Ryde will be closing its doors for good on Sunday 11th August, it has been confirmed.
A notice in the window of the betting shop states that it will be closing tomorrow, but without any explanation as too why. It also thanks customers for their custom.
The Ryde store opened in the former Johnsons dry cleaning and Klicks building in early 2017 with the creation of 5 jobs. The closure shouldn’t come as a massive surprise though as it was announced earlier this year that 700 stores would be scrapped across the country.
Outstanding bets can be collected from William Hall in Newport (St James’ Street) until 30th September 2019.
Island Echo approached William Hill Plc for a statement on Friday but no response has been received at the time of publishing.

Good riddance to all gambling houses, should be outlawed, most of these companies pay no tax in uk, many are based in Gibraltar or other overseas locations.
I miss the cleaners..
Good.
I bet it would close, and won a fiver
Nice to have some good news
not for the five though
Awwww what a shame
Gambling ruins lives just like alcohol. So it shouldn’t be shoved in our faces every single day we shop for our daily bread.
So I’m glad there will be some nice extra space on the high street for decent, ethical businesses to enjoy the high street presence they have dominated for years.
Bear in mind guys, our beloved council has just invested millions into gambling firms so I’m surprised they are not bailing them out.
All this is, is an inevitable action that online companies will take as premium rent locations are no longer the way to generate the most passing trade customers.
This is the start of the online revolution for big business.
Just please, have a maximum quota for high street charity shops as it’s depressing having a high street full of “tack” and volunteers who have little to no retail experience or service training.
What are we becoming here?
the reason there are so many charity shops and bookies, is that it is a sign that no one else, wants to work hard, just to see the money they make for themselves, handed over in the form of business rates to a council. Start up a business, then pay the council, pay the landlord and the tax office, before you get to enjoy the fruits of your labour yourself – whats the point – these leeches have their hands out first.
There should be no business rates as the local council doesn’t do anything to justify getting them.
A little compassion for those losing their jobs would be nice
Yes I agree betting shops should be closed but people will do it online anyway so it won’t stop people gambling. That shop will be empty for ages before it’s took over. Look at the empty shops already in Ryde. Nearly every month there’s another business closing.
