WightSAR, the Isle of Wight’s voluntary search and rescue organisation has today (Monday) announced that they have become partners with ‘Bag It Up’ – a leading clothing and recycling organisation that helps local charities raise essential funds by collecting and reselling of clothes, shoes and textiles.
It is estimated that more than 1 million tonnes of textiles are send to landfill each year. Good quality items donated through this scheme which can be reused are sold to second-hand clothing traders in the UK and worldwide. ‘End of life’ garments are recycled into industrial wipers and cloths, mattress filling, insulation and new fibres.
WightSAR’s partnership with ‘Bag It Up’ comes as Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance cease their clothing and textile recycling scheme, which has seen Islanders donating at the big yellow bins across the Isle of Wight since 2007.
Now, donations can be made at any of the 14 recycling banks located across the Island to help support WightSAR, a voluntary organisation that relies 100% on charitable donation and as such receives no external funding to provide its 24/7 service to the Island.
The donation banks are located at:
• Arreton Barns – Main Road, Arreton
• Binstead Post Office – Binstead Hill, Ryde
• Brading Town Trust Car Park – Brading
• Co-op – Mill Hill Road, Cowes
• Co-op – Landguard Road, Shanklin
• Co-op – Anglesea Street, Ryde
• Downside C & L Centre – Furlongs, Newport
• Morrisons – Newport Road, Sandown
• Riverside Centre – The Quay, Newport
• Spar – Victoria Street, Ventnor
• The Eight Bells – High Street, Carisbrooke
• The Horse & Groom – Shalfleet
• The Horseshoe Inn – Newport Road, Northwood
• The Prince of Wales – York Avenue, East Cowes
To ensure your donated items are kept dry and protected, Islanders are asked to put items in any type of bags before donating them, such as bin liners or carrier bags.
WightSAR would like to hear from any commercial businesses with a public car park that would be prepared to assist the organisation by hosting a recycling bank on their premises. Anyone who can help is asked to email [email protected].
