A field of 125 athletes took to the seafront for this year’s MCC Promotions Sandown & Shanklin 10km, battling a tough breeze as they set off from Yaverland.
Ryde Harrier Kieron Dry soon pulled clear of the field and went on to comfortably win the race in a time of 37min 50sec.
Among the women, Monika Pladiate and Meghan Carter were both running inside the top 20 early on, with Monika leading and Meghan close behind.
The field was well strung out by the time runners reached the water station and turnaround point at the Lazy Wave Cafe at the far end of Shanklin seafront.
Having battled against the breeze on the outward leg, competitors had the advantage of the wind behind them as they headed back towards the finish at Wildheart Animal Sanctuary.
Monika extended her advantage on the return leg to win the women’s race, finishing 12th overall in 43min 44sec. Meghan took second place in 44min 45sec, finishing 15th overall.
Junior Layla Holbrook secured third place in the women’s race with an impressive time of 47min 01sec.
In the men’s race, Nike Powell Brading finished second, with Winston Woodwood taking third. Both broke the 40-minute barrier, recording times of 39min 42sec and 39min 52sec respectively.
Junior cyclist Ewan Cook also produced a notable performance, finishing 6th overall in 41min 10sec. He was closely followed by Ryde Harrier Trevor McAlister, competing in the Masters 40-44 category.
A strong turnout from West Wight Road Runners saw the club rewarded with the team prize.
Money from the event was donated to the Sport in Mind charity.
MCC Promotions has thanked all helpers, volunteers and marshals, as well as Brown’s Family Golf and Pluto Cafe, Lazy Wave Cafe and Wight First Aid for their support.
The annual event is set to return next year on Sunday 5th September 2027.
