Southern Water is launching a major operation involving 26 storage tanks, around 20 tankers and multiple pumps to repair the latest burst sewer in Ryde.
Island Echo reported earlier this week that Southern Water had mounted an emergency response after a sewer burst near Appley Park Transfer Wastewater Pumping Station.
A large hole has been dug in Appley Park as crews work to repair the burst, with Appley Car Park closed and tankers brought into the area to help manage wastewater flows.
The scale of the operation means 26 storage tanks are being mobilised alongside multiple diesel and submersible pumps and approximately 20 tankers.
Ferry logistics and the phased arrival of plant and equipment have added extra time to the repair programme, resulting in the closure of Appley Car Park being extended.
Southern Water is now aiming to begin the main repair on Monday evening (21st September), with the repair and subsequent testing expected to be completed within approximately 1 day.
While the car park remains closed, Southern Water will also replace 2 non-return valves. Carrying out the additional work now is intended to avoid the need for another closure of Appley Car Park later in the year.
The water company currently intends to reopen the car park before the end of next week, with the area set to be cleared by Sunday 4th October ahead of Appley Day.
The latest failure comes after a lengthy history of problems with the sewer network at Appley, with tankers and temporary storage tanks having been deployed on several occasions in recent years.
