This year marks the 40th anniversary for The Wight Strollers and even though they are not celebrating how they may have hoped, the group are continuing to spread plenty of cheer as well as donating vital funds to Isle of Wight charities and good causes.
With the summer musical ‘The Wind in the Willows’ postponed, attentions have turned to keeping members smiling at a time when they should have all been rehearsing twice a week together. Weekly zoom quizzes have been held, with puzzle packs and other challenges sent out.
It’s not all fun and games though… The Wight Strollers have been able to make an emergency donation of £1,000 to the Isle of Wight Foodbank. On top of this emergency donation, the proceeds from ‘Sleeping Beauty’ – totally £8,000 – are to be distributed to this year’s chosen charities including the IOW MS Society, West Wight Men in Sheds, SPIIOW, Wight DASH and the Isle of Wight School Pastors.
The Wight Strollers will also purchase their 10th Public Access Defibrillator for the Island this year.
A special lockdown sing-song has been produced and uploaded to Youtube.
Emily Scotcher of The Wight Strollers says:
“So many things are so uncertain for so many people at present, and this makes us more determined then ever before to try to spread a little joy amongst the Island community, in whatever way we can.
“The lockdown video is our little message of positivity to everyone, and a promise that we will be back as soon as we can, in readiness for our February 2021 pantomime, which is due to be announced shortly”.
