A spell of very strong winds and heavy rain will combine to give some nasty conditions for a few hours later this evening, according to local forecasters IW Met Service.
South to Southwesterly wind gusts of up to 50mph are likely in exposed locations this eveniug and this, combined with up to 15mm of rain falling in some places, will lead to some rather dangerous driving conditions for a time. The highest risk is over the hills and in more open areas along the West coast of the Island.
The strongest winds are only expected to last for a few hours but will hit around the same time that it is planned for the Cowes Week firework display to begin. The RAF Typhoon display at 19:30 has already been cancelled, but organisers say the firework display will go ahead ‘whatever the weather’.
There may be some transport delays for a time which includes cross-Solent travel.
Jamie Russell, Chief Forecaster at IW Met Service explains:
“50mph reaches our summer wind warning threshold – this is because of busier roads, higher likelihood of small watercraft being on the water, as well as the trees being in full leaf. This threshold increases to 65mph between October and the end of April”.
The yellow weather warning for wind and rain is in force from 18:00 tonight until 01:00 tomorrow morning (Saturday).
