The Wightlink Warriors have today (Wednesday) revealed that former Elite League rider Lee Smart is the final member of the Isle of Wight’s 2016 speedway team, as plans progress to bring racing back to Smallbrook Stadium in Ryde by April.
With Lee Smart now on board the Warriors management say they have put together an exciting side of both youth and experience, using up 39.58 of the 40 points limit, and have produced a team which is capable to improve in every team position.
A very happy-to-be-back Lee said:
“I am delighted to become part of the new regime at the Isle of Wight under the new management team of Barry and Martin. Having taken a year out, I have been in discussions with the Isle of Wight for a couple of weeks now, and I am really excited to become a Warrior in 2016.
“It looks as if we will be in for a good season on track too, as the management have done a great job in putting a strong looking team together in such a short space of time after being accepted in to the league on 2nd December.
“It is good that I know most of the team already as both James and Brendan are old team mates of mine back in the Weymouth days, I know Mark and Matt from the grass track scene and I am looking forward to meet George, Ellis and Tyler soon. So, it all bodes well to have a great team spirit in the Warriors camp this year and I cannot wait to get started.
“I would like to wish all Warriors supporters a Happy Christmas and look forward to meeting everyone in the spring, if not before.”
Warriors Co-boss Barry Bishop said:
“We are extremely pleased to have secured the services of Lee in 2016 for the Warriors. Lee has lots of speedway experience and his year away from the sport he loves has made him more determined to return to the league and impress.
“We believe Lee will play a critical part of the team this year and his experience, along with other team members, will be a great help to our junior team members as they progress.
“Martin and I have worked very closely with our advisors to get the best combination of riders for our side in 2016 and we are extremely proud of the riders who chose to join us in our first year: Brendan Johnson, James Cockle, Matt Saul, Tyler Govier, George Piper, Ellis Perk, Mark Baseby and now Lee. Welcome to the team. Game on.”
The Warriors will hold a celebration party on 29th December where fans can meet riders, sponsors, management, sit on a bike, take photos, participate in a raffle, enjoy music and more. Entry is just £5 with all proceeds going to the air fence, rider, fuel and tyre funds.
