Dodgy pipework that keeps leading to the closure of toilets at Yaverland could cause chaos ahead of one of the busiest summer seasons in a long time.
With the Island expecting a glut of tourists heading to the seaside, having public conveniences open along the beaches is a key necessity – but at Yaverland car park people could be caught short.
Amenities beside the popular beach have had to be closed on and off recently amid drainage problems and whilst it is understood Southern Water has implemented a temporary fix to the problem, closures could continue until proper attention is given. It’s also understood that malicious acts have led to the closure of the toilets.
Plans for the toilets to be fixed and refurbished will have to be put on hold though – until at least 2023 – with most of Sandown Town Council’s attention on the completion of the new Eastern Garden toilets which, because of delays, won’t be ready until the end of June or early July, hopefully.
Closures of the facilities in the car park at Yaverland mean the closest toilets for anyone on the beach at Sandown or Yaverland are those at Sandham Gardens or alternatively the paid toilets on Sandown Pier, leaving many residents annoyed at the issue.
Portaloos cannot be used either as the land is owned by the Isle of Wight Council and a license, as well as hiring fees, would need to be obtained.
One disgruntled local said:
“When politicians are involved s##t defies gravity to travel upwards and usually sprouts from mouths instead”.

Portaloos, they taking the p*ss.
Dodgy pipework that keeps leading to the closure of toilets
..
So, for ages they have known the cause of the problem, but done absolutely nothing about it – that just about sums them up – they would rather go for the quick/cheap option of jetting the pipes periodically, rather than implementing a permanent solution, which costs more in the short term and requires more effort, however, solves the problem and in the longer term, becomes the cheaper option.
ineffective managers, implementing ineffective strategies, because they are lazy, incompetent or both, unless they can demonstrate a more obvious reason for this debacle.
Did you miss the statement: ‘It’s also understood that malicious acts have led to the closure of the toilets’?
Until vandalism is fully dealt with, it will always make councils and authorities think twice about spending yet more money on repairs. Sure, it’s an excuse for inaction, but the morons who mindlessly damage public facilities are having a huge impact on our resources around the Island.
Too much money is wasted on making public toilets look nice, with designers imagining all users are decent people, rather than creating them for the lowest cretins in society.
They should me just made of stainless steel, no seats which are the usual item to be kicked apart, no push button or chains as these are abused and just have infra red auto flush hidden behind metal grill.
The urinal just a solid stainless steel item.
The French with open top and bottom public WC’s are ideal as no vandal or gays can get up to their odd antics without being seen.
IF you are desperate a basic system is all you need and cheap to maintain.
Sounds to me you are Homophobic and a classist , and comparing toilets in another country has nothing to do with the sewage works. Or didn’t you read the article!
Anti-perversionist is my take.
I travel to France on several occasions and their toilet facilities are better than here.
Visitors pay incredible prices to cross the Solent and holiday here. IOW residents and visitors need working public toilets. Surely a basic facility can be provided. Well no, not on the IOW apparently.
You couldn’t make it. It’s absolutely unbelievable that some toilets are still not available. Move into the 21st century IOW Council, get ‘pay to use toilets’ installed to cover some, if not all running costs.
Within weeks of opening, the rainwater tank which supplies these toilets had been fouled by someone emptying a chemical toilet into it.
No matter how hard you try, some a**ehole will come along and ruin it for everybody.
Which is WHY I correctly stated, that public toilets MUST be designed for the ‘lowest’ in society not the normal or decent now.
These chemical toilets being emptied into public toilets often block them as days of effluent are dumped into small water saving public Wc’s which then block costing a fortune to fix.
So whilst the rainwater tank may have been ruined by such so are many of the Isles public loos
Too many low lives living in vans near beaches, same at Bembridge etc, they crawl out from their encampment behind Tesco and head for the car parks all Summer.
Its ok for council too put porta loos at sea close for festival though huh!
Disgraceful council lazyness YET AGAIN .anyone notice how perfect and preened sea close grass and hedges are for the festival though?then see rest of islands verges and hedgerows! Money grabbing all theyre good at.
Btw …wont be long untill sandham loos go payg as yaverlands no good.
And pier ones are up flights of stairs .fab for disabled.
Stop wasting our money on floating bridge and sort yav loos….just not using cheap cowboys next time(the same ones who fix our roads!)
It’s disgraceful that in a seaside town the toilets are being shut because of problems they had this during the winter and early spring so why wait till the busiest bank holiday to say they might be closed .I’m sure the I o w council would let them put ports loos on the site while they sort the problem you just can’t leave a popular beach with no loos come on wake up you lot
Always excuses for not doing the job properly and so typical of the ‘authorities’ on the Isle of Wight. Do the job properly first time and it will cost far less than keep on going back again and again.
Well needs repairing asap,my Dogging club uses it as a temporary HQ
hillarious Bert!!
WELL…. Since they were built they have been about as reliable as the Cowes river ferry.
I have come to expect a great amount of incompetence from those who are expected to look after plan and build facilities across the Island
Wait for the new housing that we are told they can borrow£40m for!
