The driver of an Audi TT has been arrested on suspicion of drug driving after crashing into railings in Shanklin tonight (Thursday). Emergency services were called to reports of the single vehicle road traffic collision on Sandown Road, near Skew Bridge, at around 19:00. The black Audi has gone head-on into railings whilst travelling towards Shanklin. The force of the impact has caused significant front-end damage and has led to the deployment of the car’s airbags. Firefighters from Shanklin are on scene carrying out scene safety, including clearing fluids from the carriageway.
Paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service have conveyed a female passenger to St Mary’s Hospital for further assessment, whilst Police have arrested the young male driver on suspicion of drug driving. He is being checked over before being taken into custody at Newport Police Station for blood retrieval. Sandown Road remains open to traffic in both directions, although delays are likely as the vehicle is recovered. UPDATE FRIDAY – A 19-year-old man from Ryde was arrested on suspicion of drug driving, Police have confirmed. He has been released under investigation.
