The Isle of Wight NHS Trust and Medefer won an award for Best Elective Care Recovery Initiative at this year’s HSJ Partnership Awards 2022.
The team found out that they had been shortlisted for their elective recovery programme – Clinically assessing and mitigating risk for outpatient backlogs – a proactive Covid-19 recovery initiative – earlier this year.
On announcing the winner at a special ceremony last week, the HSJ Partnership Awards judging panel said:
“This was an extremely ambitious, system-wide initiative that was delivered at pace. There were demonstrable outcomes in terms of reduced waiting lists, changing behaviour and culture, and working across the healthcare system.
“The judges remarked on the positive element of GP education, and the improvement and quality of referrals. It was clear that patient experience improved and is at the centre of the ambition, ensuring no patients were digitally disadvantaged and demonstrated drive for equality of care.”
Chief Operating Officer, Joe Smyth, has said:
“We are delighted to have won this award with our partners, Medefer for our elective recovery programme.
“Together we have worked hard to reduce the waiting times for our patients across our Island community and I am proud of what we have been able to achieve despite the additional challenges we have experienced from COVID-19. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our staff who worked so hard to deliver this fantastic achievement”
Chief Executive of Medefer, Bahman Nedjat-Shokouhi, adds:
“I am so proud of our partnership between the IOW NHS Trust and Medefer, the results we have delivered to the patients on the island. It is a pleasure working with the visionary team. Thank you to Joe Smyth and the team.”

The Island’s doing well.
The software company I work for also won an award at the same event.
Well done guys. A little good news.
Think there’s still a lot to be done in improving care for patients whilst in hospital. Lack of communication on and between wards and other things is still happening.
