A dog that took a 200ft plunge over the cliff at Tennyson Down was successfully rescued by the volunteers of Freshwater Independent Lifeboat this afternoon (Wednesday).
It was around 12:10 that HM Coastguard was alerted to the plight of Ted, who had gone over the edge – with his owners fearing the worst.
Coastguard Rescue Teams from The Needles and Ventnor were mobilised to the scene and took position high upon Tennyson Down, overlooking Freshwater Bay.
The assistance of Freshwater Independent Lifeboat was also requested, with the volunteer crew launching the inshore lifeboat soon after.
FILB crew member James Metcalfe courageously entered the water and made his way ashore, successfully retrieving Ted from the base of the cliff. He was supported by Luke Stagg and Helm Ronan McCann in the rescue.
The dog was safely returned to land at around 2:30 PM by the FILB team. Ted was taken to the vet for overnight observation but is reportedly in good health, an incredible outcome after such a dangerous fall.
The local resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, expressed deep gratitude to both FILB and the Coastguard for their quick and courageous response.

It’s about time dog owners kept their dogs on a lead.
The costs rescuing the poor dog should be charged to the
Dog owner.
Lesson for the future, keep your dog on a lead.
KEEP YOUR DOGS ON LEADS!!! SIMPLE. Glad the poor dog is ok but the owners should receive a big bill for their stupidity!!
I am so pleased the poor dog is safe and well it could have easily ended up a different way. I do wish owners would keep their dogs on leads for the animals own safety, I think owners are very irresponsible for letting dogs run loose on the cliff edge this could have caused the poor dog unnecessary suffering not to mention the cost of the emergency services.
