The driver of a vehicle which failed to stop for Police in Shanklin earlier this afternoon (Tuesday) has been arrested on suspicion of several offences, including disqualified driving.
A local dog unit requested that a Ford Focus pulled over after being spotted in the Shanklin area shortly before 13:00. However, the driver failed to stop and a pursuit began. Damage was caused to the Police vehicle in the process.
The pursuit, which headed up Victoria Avenue, was short-lived and the occupants decamped nearby. It wasn’t long until Police Dog Bolt and his handler tracked down and located the vehicle’s passenger.
After a foot chase by Armed Response Officers, who are part of the Roads Policing Unit, the driver was also detained.
He has been arrested on suspicion of several offences including driving whilst disqualified, having no insurance and failing to stop for police.
The driver remains in custody at Newport Police Station at this time.
UPDATE WEDNESDAY – 26-year-old Joseph Barrass has been charged with 5 offences. Read more at https://www.islandecho.co.uk/26-year-old-newport-man-charged-following-police-pursuit/.

Feel Sorry for the Police they do their job then the Courts make them look like idiots by telling the criminal you bad boy you shouldn’t do that and they go home laughing
Yet the courts will just add a few more months to the now proven ineffective driving ban, and fine the trash, which in all likelyhood will be paid by the state via it’s child tax credits or similar.
Should take the car, sell it, or scrap it, and jail it for two years minimum.
the car, unless he or someone he knows produces the correct paperwork the car will be crushed.
needs stronger sentencing for drivers who have no insurance, putting other road users at risk, the police car`s damage will now be paid for by the tax payer as he had no insurance
I thought no insurance means a crushed car, has this changed?
Firstly I am not condoning the crime in any way, but the commentators on this site do not seem to be aware that firstly the prisons are mostly full, the cost of jailing somebody for a year is between £20,000 and £40,000. The reason suspended sentences are handed out does work as an effective deterrent, the slightest offence during the suspended period would result in custodial, it is also why apart from the suspended element, the offender is also given a community order, hence little cost to the government (tax payer) and contributing to the community.
Oh come on some one say it.
Which one do you want us to say? ‘Pennyfeathers’ or ‘More bad driving on the IW’
Sounds a frightfully dangerous young chap, to ignore the law in such a manner.
