Yellow weather warnings for severe gales and heavy rain have been issued by local weather forecasters IW Met Service, as the Isle of Wight says goodbye to the hot Summer sunshine.
Gusts of up to 70mph are expected on the Island throughout tomorrow (Tuesday) with the warning in force from 08:00 until 21:00.
A small but powerful Atlantic storm will move in on Tuesday morning, bringing with it some very strong southwesterly winds along with heavy rain.
Wind gusts of 50-60mph are possible almost anywhere across the Isle of Wight with the potential of even stronger gusts up to 70mph around exposed hills and coastal areas, especially during any showers that move through on Tuesday afternoon.
A separate yellow weather warning for heavy rain has also been issued and is valid for 12 hours from 01:00 until 13:00 tomorrow. 20-30mm of rain is possible locally and this, combined with the strong winds, will give some very hazardous travelling conditions.
Keep an eye on this article and www.iwmetservice.co.uk for all the latest…
As it stands, things are looking much calmer for the Bank Holiday Weekend.
What is a yellow weather warning?
A yellow warning means there is a risk of disruption to everyday activities such as outdoor leisure activities as well as the potential for some travel disruptions. There may be some property damage depending on the weather type and there may also be a risk of accident or injury due to the weather if you are spending time outdoors.

Winter is coming
Very good …could say it was winterfell lol
So begins the long dark cold days of wind and rain.
One expects many more Island businesses to fold as people have done nothing to give protection to shoppers now queuing outside. Fine in warm, dry weather, but come the rain, the wind, the cold, only very essential shopper will tolerate such.
So whilst large stores can have plenty of customers inside, the smaller shops will likely fold as their customer base, either go to large dry stores, or don’t bother and go without essential items.
The good times are now over.
I think someone needs to go on that H.A.P.P.Y. course……
A bit sooner than later ..lol
A right little ray of sunshine aren’t we.
As a visitor to the Island we travelled to Ventnor on our first day to find the majority of the small independent shops closed. Reading the opening hours that were actually visible it stated times were Tuesday till Saturday. Some are only open Wednesday till Saturday, they also open at leisure and close just as quickly. I’m not surprised with this hard working ethos (or lack of) that many businesses fold.
Ventnor lost its jewel in the crown when that family moved in and complained about the bell on the town clock ringing and following just the single complaint that they made, it was silenced.
Ventnor history – gone!
plenty of crack in ventnor
A few in here as well!
Sorry to hear of your miserable shopping attempts in Ventnor. Many shops are part time open there. Some have other jobs, some are likely on furlough others are ‘on’ other herbs and some just can’t be bothered.
This IS the beauty of the Island, and if you wish to have high pressure, pushy salesmen, try Turkey next year.
We like the laid back life, as it is. I can understand that it is not for all, but maybe this is the wrong choice of destination?
I like it just as it is Ena, ever since the 80’s when I was overwhelmed with the smell of ether in the air on the seafront it’s a must go and sit there again each time I visit place.
Chin up Ena, the IOW Council extended the holiday season into October to help mitigate some business lost through lockdown. Plus the weather tends to hold out into November nowadays due to shifting seasons in recent years. I also agree with Victoria, local businesses on the Island do themselves no favours whatsoever by inexplicably only being open for short hours and only on certain days. I’ve noticed this a lot in both Sandown and Shanklin. Surely given what they have missed out on earlier in the year they would be keen to utilise every hour possible to claw back some revenue.
I love it when i go to Greece / Cyprus and the quirky gift shops are open in the evenings with people milling about and the odd bar /taverna dotted about . Lots of life but here its dead !
Presume the IOW council will also extend the seafront parking meter season.
People usually come to the Island for its beaches, countryside and historical attractions. Not to go shopping! You don’t know that small shopkeepers may have, or have had, Covid, may be shielding, may be mourning a death. Tescos, Boots and the Coop are open, anything essential can be purchased.
And Hursts.
I am not talking about going on a shopping trip. The relevance of my comment applies to businesses that are a normal draw for visitors, coffee shops, restaurants, antique shops, specialist product providers, beach shops, gift shops, emporiums, art shops etc. There are many examples where proprietors choose not to open beyond their limited hours. This situation has not just occurred through Covid, it has been the case for years but if there is a reason i would have thought the sensible thing would be to place a sign to advise passing customers of the status (without going into detail of course).
Its a bit of rain not the end of the world
All doom and gloomy, we need to talk our country up for a change, we’ve had three years of doom mongers so let’s change the record and talk ourselves up for a change…
Great!
That’s a cue for every idiot to head for the water.
dont worry there is always some about
Just wait until the Pennyfeathers estate is built. The weather will be twice as bad etc etc etc.
LOL
Well, there WILL be more pollution, more CO2, more drainage on natural resources, more destruction of the natural world. So yeah, I expect the weather will be worse in future as this damage takes it toll. It all adds up.
Sun will be out again this weekend.Probably be a nice spell of sunshine in September.
Just because the headline predicts the end of summer it does not necessarily make it so
Its a bit of rain not covid 20 enjoy life ur be moaning you cant do any think because they have locked us down again with the fake virus cheer up
Who said I was moaning? I was simply stating that environmental damage WILL result in worse pollution, flooding, etc. You know, just stating facts.
Also, ‘fake virus’, LOL. I can see you are one of those conspiracy-theory believing wing-nuts. You probably think it’s all to do with 5G.
