Sodium Hydroxide has been identified as the chemical used in a horrific attack on a young woman in Sandown earlier this month.
The 22-year-old victim is understood to have lost her sight in at least one eye, possibly both, following the unforgivable attack at Royal China in Sandown High Street during the early hours of Wednesday 4th June.
Zhijian Zhang, a waitress at the Chinese restaurant, has suffered life-changing burns to her face and upper body after she was attacked with the dangerous and highly corrosive chemical, which burns through skin in seconds. The scarred-for-life girl remains in the specialist Odstock Hospital in Salisbury where she is receiving treatment for her horrific injuries.
48-year-old Sau Lin-Hin of Mulberry Way, Ryde – who is listed as the director of Royal China at 16 High Street, Sandown – has been remanded in custody having been charged by Police with maliciously and unlawfully causing grievous bodily harm with intent and will appear in front of the Isle of Wight Crown Court on 30th June.
The attack has shocked the local community with many saying they will boycott the town’s restaurant and takeaway. Royal China reopened just two days after the attack.
A 24-year-old arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender has been bailed pending further enquiries.
