Premier in Shanklin High Street has been handed a food hygiene rating of 1 out of 5 following a recent inspection by Environmental Health officers, with the report citing serious failings in food safety, labelling and temperature control.
The inspection, carried out on Monday 3rd November, resulted in a total score of 35, placing the Regent Street premises in the ‘major improvement necessary’ category.
Issues identified during the visit included the storage of high-risk food above legal temperature limits, inaccurate labelling on imported goods, and poor implementation of food safety procedures.
Officers found that high-risk food items, including sandwiches, were being stored in a display unit at 12°C – well above the legal maximum of 8°C. It was determined that the chiller’s location near the entrance was allowing cold air to be displaced by ambient external air, preventing it from maintaining safe temperatures.
Temperature monitoring procedures were also found to be inadequate. Infrared thermometers showed acceptable surface readings, but actual food temperatures were significantly higher. Staff were unaware of which record books applied to which units, and no corrective action had been taken when temperature breaches were identified.
The inspector had to advise the operator on how to follow procedures already set out in the Safer Food Better Business (SFBB) pack. Staff were reminded to conduct regular ‘prove-it’ checks and to record opening temperatures correctly.
A large number of American soft drinks were found on sale without legally required English labelling. These products listed additives such as E102 (Tartrazine), E110 (Sunset Yellow FCF), and E129 (Allura Red) without the mandatory warning that they may adversely affect children’s attention and behaviour.
Environmental Health also noted that shelf-stable UHT clotted cream was being stored in a refrigerated unit. While not unsafe, this practice was considered misleading to customers, who may believe the product to be fresh. Officers warned that this could constitute a breach of food labelling laws.

The shop has not been open long, another
Island filth hole.
Terrible little “shop” this kind of practice has been going on for years. The person that runs it need some serious customer service skill training as well. None of the recommendations will be followed. DO NOT GO IN THERE!
Most are Franchise’s but actually come under Booker group.
All are independent shops supplied by bookers (Tesco). They are not a franchise but they trade under the symbol banner Premier.
