Victoria Avenue in Shanklin is set to remain closed for the next 3 weeks to allow scaffolding to be erected for maintenance work on a private property.
The road closure, immediately before the junction with Shanklin High Street, is expected to remain in place for the full advertised 21-day period.
Scaffolding has been erected to enable roof works, guttering repairs and external redecoration to be carried out.
As the scaffolding extends into the carriageway, a localised closure has been implemented to protect road users and those working at height.
Island Roads says there is insufficient space to safely accommodate the scaffolding without affecting the carriageway, meaning the closure could not be avoided.
Southern Vectis buses are diverting via Florence Road and Grange Road for the duration of the works.
Motorists travelling towards Shanklin from the Whiteley Bank direction can still access the town via St John’s Road.
Island Roads has said the closure has been coordinated with other planned highway works to avoid clashes, with the timing scheduled outside of the main tourism season in a bid to minimise disruption.
About time some Health and Safety on the isoand
If I had a pound everytime I drive along roads and streets
on the island where scaffold lorries are parked blocking roads
or causing an obstruction I would be a Millionaire.
When these lorries are delivering their tools and materials
they should do that during the night, or the council should
do what many places on the mainland do, make them get
permission.
On the island they just rock up, park on Pavements blocking
Pedestrian walkways, not to mention when they are throwing
their clamps from the top of scaffolding whilst vehicles are driving
by or people are walking by.
Ventnor a few months ago was an example of that happening.
DO THE SO CALLED AUTHORITIES ON THE ISLAND NOT
DO SITE VISITS AND CHECK FOR HEALTH AND SAFETY
OR DO THEY WAIT FOR A DISASTER TO HAPPEN THEN THEY
ACT!
PREVENTION is better than CURE.
It would be nice to see more works carried out with closures
safety is imperative.
I must say New York is the city held up by scaffolding,
but I must say there seems to he more scaffolding
on the island than in the City that never sleeps.
It is obvious these scaffold companies are making shed
loads of money, so in future think before you park
BLOCKING PEDESTRIAN WALKWAYS!
