The 1st Shanklin Scout Group – led by Mrs Carol Harvey – ceremonially planted 3 Oak tree saplings within the grounds of the Big Mead Park as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebration on Wednesday 13th July.
The event was well attended by Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, and their families, who took the opportunity of enjoying a ‘Picnic in the Park’.
The saplings had been donated to the Scout Group by Shanklin Town Council. Each tree sapling has its own individually engraved plaque dedicated to the 1st Shanklin Scout Troop, 1st Shanklin Cub Scouts, and the 1st Shanklin Beaver Scouts.
In attendance on the evening and to help with the planting were Shanklin Town Mayor – Cllr Chris Quirk and Cllr Michael Beston.
The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) is a unique tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022, which invites people from across the United Kingdom to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee”. The official planting season is between October and March. The 3 saplings will not be removed from their pots but watered daily until October when they will be planted permanently in the Big Mead.
The Queen’s Green Canopy will encourage the planting of trees to create a legacy in honour of the Queen’s leadership of the nation, which will benefit future generations. As well as inviting the planting of new trees, the QGC will dedicate a network of 70 Ancient Woodlands across the United Kingdom and identify 70 Ancient Trees to celebrate Her Majesty’s 70 years of service.
A vacancy has arisen for the role of treasurer within the Shanklin Scout Group. Should anyone be interested in filling this position, contact Mrs Carol Harvey directly on 07716 699130.
