A car blaze has blocked the main road through Brading this morning (Wednesday), as a heatwave grips the Isle of Wight.
Ryde Fire Station was alerted to the incident on New Road – between Ryde and Sandown – at 10:00, with 1 wholetime appliance mobilised.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are currently utilising hose reel jets to control and extinguish the blaze.
The fire has destroyed a rare Talbot Matra Murena, which was travelling towards Ryde when a fire broke out at the rear of the mid-engined vehicle.
Police have closed New Road in both directions, with Southern Vectis buses Routes 2 & 3 diverting via St Helens.
UPDATE @ 10:40 – The fire has now been fully extinguished, but firefighters continue to damp down the charred remains of the 41-year-old classic car.
As the closure continues, traffic through Brading is diverting via The Mall.
UPDATE @ 12:05 – The former vehicle has now been recovered by Bartletts, however, it is expected that New Road will remain closed by Police for hours to come as Island Roads work to clear the road of a substantial amount of oil.
UPDATE @ 15:00 – New Road Brading has now reopened in both directions following an effort to rid the road of split oil.

And what would the age limit be on old vehicles? 5 years, 7 years?
25 years plus, especially being they are Mot exempt!

I know many newer vehicles are driving around the
Island without Mot’s but it seems to be allowed on
the island.
The island needs Anpr in all petrol stations, car parks
and Ferry Ports to HIGHLIGHT illegal vehicles
so they can be clamped and towed away.
The former vehicle…. another classic car less.
Rare car, shame its gone.
It lasted longer than the modern rubbish will….
The old ones are the best ones and I am not talking
about my birds.
