A car blaze has blocked the main road through Brading this morning (Wednesday), as a heatwave grips the Isle of Wight.
Ryde Fire Station was alerted to the incident on New Road – between Ryde and Sandown – at 10:00, with 1 wholetime appliance mobilised.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are currently utilising hose reel jets to control and extinguish the blaze.
The fire has destroyed a rare Talbot Mantra, which was travelling towards Ryde when a fire broke out at the rear of the mid-engined vehicle.
Police have closed New Road in both directions, with Southern Vectis buses Routes 2 & 3 diverting via St Helens.
UPDATE @ 10:40 – The fire has now been fully extinguished but firefighters continue to damp down the charred remains of the 41-year-old classic car.
As the closure continues, traffic through the Brading is diverting via The Mall.
