A scheme to transform a derelict section of a family-run hotel into 13 flats has been endorsed by an Isle of Wight county councillor.
Conservative representative Michael Beston said Milverdene Hotels Trading’s plans to convert Wentworth House at 23 Hope Road in Shanklin, which is linked to the 3-star Gracellie Hotel, will improve the area’s appearance and safety.
The existing building at the site is said to be ‘beyond economic repair’ as part of the hotel, with the only viable use for it as housing, according to the applicant’s agent, Town Planning Expert.
Cllr Beston, who represents Shanklin Central, said the development would contribute positively to the Island’s housing supply. He said:
“The building at No. 23 Hope Road forms a derelict and economically unviable section of the former Graceille Hotel.
“The documentation clearly demonstrates that this part of the building is no longer capable of functioning as viable visitor accommodation and is now beyond economic repair in its current use.
“The proposal therefore represents a sustainable and policy aligned reuse of an existing structure, consistent with national guidance encouraging the effective use of brownfield land and the reuse of redundant buildings.
“The proposal also offers wider community benefits. Bringing this long vacant building back into active use will improve the appearance and safety of the area, reduce the risk of ongoing deterioration, and support the vitality of Hope Road.”
Highways service provider Island Roads previously filed an objection to the application, citing ‘inadequate car parking capacity, layout and turning facilities’.
The Isle of Wight Council’s public consultation on proposal 26/00005/FUL ends on 20th February and a decision is expected on 23rd April.
