UPDATED: Emergency services are this afternoon (Sunday) attending a serious road traffic incident involving a motorcyclist in Binstead.
Police and ambulance crews were called to the scene on Binstead Main Road shortly after 16:10, including the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance that has landed near to Ryde Golf Club.
Island Echo understands a motorcyclist has come off their vehicle.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area with traffic being diverted through Binstead estate.
UPDATE 16:58 – The male rider of the motorcycle has been conveyed to St Mary ‘s Hospital by land ambulance under Police escort. The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance flew to St Mary’s helipad also.
Island Roads have closed Binstead Road from the junction with Ringwood Road to the junction with Mayfield Road.
SOUTHERN VECTIS
Route 9 & 4 are being diverted from line of route at Wootton via Briddlesford Road, Downs to Ryde.
Routes 9 & 4 may suffer delays & cancellations due to extensive diversions.
They are also unable to serve Wootton or Binstead with either Route 9 or Route 4 buses until Police & Emergency Services have cleared the road
All passengers for Route 4 buses Ryde to East Cowes should board Route 9 buses to Newport & then transfer to Route 5 buses to East Cowes.
UPDATE 18:10 – The Hampshire Constabulary Collision Investigation Unit from the mainland has arrived at the scene to carry out an investigation into the incident. The unit only attends fatal, life-changing and life-threatening incidents.
It is believed the motorcyclist suffered a medical episode whilst riding his motorcycle.
UPDATE 21:00 – Island Roads have tweeted to say that Binstead Road, Ryde has now been re-opened.
UPDATE MONDAY: Police have this morning confirmed the rider of the motorcycle has died.
It is understood the rider suffered a medical episode before colliding with a post at the side of the carriageway. He was taken to hospital however despite the best efforts of medical teams, he was pronounced dead.
Hampshire Constabulary are now appealing for witnesses to the single-vehicle collision. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Isle of Wight Roads Policing Unit on 101.
