The Isle of Wight’s Member of Parliament, Bob Seely, has backed a No Deal Brexit following a vote in the House of Commons last night (Wednesday).
Mr Seely voted for the country to leave the European Union without a deal when he and other MPs descended on London last night. The option was defeated by 400 votes to 160.
Some 62% of Islanders voted to Leave the EU in the 2016 Referendum so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Mr Seely has honoured the voice of his constituents, but Mr Seely has previously made it clear that he wants a deal to be struck.
Seely voted against all other options on the table including: UK-wide customs union, a confirmatory public vote, a close economic relationship with the EU, UK member of the EFTA and EEA, revoking Article 50, seeking preferential trade arrangements with the EU and remaining part of the EEA/EFTA without a customs union.
As it stands the United Kingdom will leave the EU on 12th April without a deal unless the Prime Minister can win support for her Deal.
Vix Lowthion, Leader of the Isle of Wight Green Party, has said that the country must ‘take back control’ and hold a ‘People’s Vote’…
“The nation’s politicians are up the creak with no paddle, no captain and no plan. We have a broken, out dated system which has resulted in abysmal failure.
“Our MP, Bob Seely, has rejected every single option – but has now come out in favour of No Deal. This is an utterly irresponsible stance for him to take.
“Westminster has ceased to function as a national forum, and it’s now clearer than ever that we the people of the United Kingdom must intervene. We have to Take Back Control and hold a People’s Vote.”
Mr Seely has been approached for a statement.
UPDATE @ 10:57 – Bob Seely has this morning said:
“Parliament needs to get on with Brexit and respect the result of the 2016 referendum. The Government’s agreement with the EU is the best way to achieve this. I want to leave with an agreement, however the only way to rule out no deal without going back on the referendum result is to agree a deal. We need to get on with this. I still hope Parliament will vote to leave with a deal.
“In the meantime I continue to fight for the needs of the Island and Islanders. Regardless of what happens with Brexit, giving the Island a strong voice in Westminster will always be my priority.”

Democracy is dead. Long live democracy. Tomorrow will be the blackest day in the history of our democracy. It isn’t about whether you voted to leave or remain, it is about all MPs taking away from us our right to determine our future. Why do they think so many voted to leave the EU? It was for exactly what they have done, ignoring the people who voted for them and telling us they know better. I despair.
The world has been watching the antics of our MPs in the Commons. Laughing and heckling those trying to speak. Do they not know how serious the situation is. People’s jobs and livelihood are suffering. It is time to stop playing politics, and get on with the job.
Surely it has become clear by now that a No Deal exit would cost the Isle of Wight and everywhere else in the country money, jobs and future prosperity. It will hit the poorest in society the hardest. Our MP has chosen a No Deal exit and all the pain this will cause as his preferred option – shame on you Mr Seely.
Stop listening to the Remainers’ lies.
Why? That’s all, why is it clear?
To my mind it is clear. If we leave the EU then trading with our nearest neighbours will be harder. More forms to fill in, delays at the border etc. These things will add costs and every day items will be more expensive. Businesses struggling to get by today will not get by tomorrow and those of us with little spare cash will find that prices for the basic things in life will be a little more expensive. And for what I ask? Please tell me because I just don’t get it? The only MPs backing a no deal Brexit are the toffs who won’t notice that bread and milk are more expensive and jobs are a little harder to come by.
Stop believing the remainers lies.
Nonsense.
we voted to leave in the referendum and voted for the party that would honour the result in the general election. We have given the government two results on this issue and we are not going to continually vote until the result is different. The decision was made by the people and must be implemented, or faith in the ballot box will be lost, as it will prove that the elected individuals have taken leave of their senses and somehow think they have the right to override the majority. Perhaps we re-run their local elections because we didn’t like the result of them being elected.
The fundamental principle of a democracy is that when something is voted on fairly and transparently, the result, as decided by the majority is carried and implemented, irrespective of the whining and complaining of those that lost. The alternative is a dictatorship by unelected, faceless bureaucrats.
Mp’s seem to think that the electorate is stupid, whilst forgetting that it is the electorate that voted for them and by virtue of that vote, MP’s are an extension of the electorate, however, based on what I see regarding some MP’s ability to do their jobs, perhaps there is some truth in that statement.
They only want to drag this out, so they can keep their noses wedged in the money trough onboard the EU gravy train.
There was no mention of a deal or no deal in the referendum question. It was simple and clear – to stop being a member of the EU or not. We voted leave, that means leave, deal or no deal.
I agree. If something is voted on fairly and transparently, the vote should stand. Shame then, that the referendum was neither fair nor transparent, as any reading up n the matter in a decent publication would tell you. Leaving at all will leave the UK isolated and worse off. Leaving with no deal would be an even worse disaster and would put us in the hands of the corrupt shower currently in charge who care for nothing but their own political party and their careers within it.
What is the basis off your argument prove it
I’m with Bob. No deal is the best option .he done the right thing .
At last common sense and common regard for constituents that elected Mr seeley
