Sandown Green Town Volunteers and local residents welcomed 2 Deputy Lord Lieutenants for the Isle of Wight to the planting of an oak tree in Battery Gardens, Sandown this week.
The tree is part of The Queen’s Green Canopy, a national tree-planting initiative to honour the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.
The volunteers and residents were joined by Mary Case DL and Graham Biss BEM DL, as well as Sandown Town Mayor Paddy Lightfoot.
Ben Holbrook, Deputy Chair of Sandown Green Town Volunteers, says:
“We hope this tree, along with other native species we have planted around Sandown, will help to mark the Platinum Jubilee and will go on to thrive for decades to come. Trees are vital to our lives and wellbeing, but also provide habitats for insects, fungi, moss, small mammals and birds.
“We would encourage everyone to consider planting a tree. There are trees suitable for even the smallest of gardens. The best time for planting is October to March, so the summer is for making your plans.
“Check out the Queens Green Canopy website where there is excellent advice for individuals and community groups who want to take part in this great initiative”.
Sandown Green Town Volunteers are representing the Island in Britain In Bloom this summer and are always looking for new keen members. You can get in touch via email at [email protected].

Typical Sandown negative comment ! When will somebody be pleased when something good happens?
Do you mean like, when they sort out all of the burnt down and derelict hotels that make the town look like a film set for apocalypse now ?
it is good as long as someone water’s it
Please, no-one tell the Council or they’ll deem it a health and safety hazard and come and cut it down.
