The threat of heavy rain and blustery conditions resulted in a smaller Ryde Illuminated Carnival tonight (Saturday), but it was still enjoyed by those who took part and spectated.
Sandown Carnival was the only committee to enter a queens float into the last carnival of the season, apart from Ryde’s own entry which led the way behind the town’s fire appliance and lifeboat.
Thinking of the safety and comfort of the young girls, many carnival committees decided against attending the event when heavy rain hit around 17:00. Sandown Carnival initially planned not to attend, but as the weather cleared they reverted to their original plans.
The shorter procession moved off at 20:30 just as the rain eased, before making its way up Dover Street, Park Road and then on the descent through the High Street and Union Street to the Esplanade.
Whilst the likes of The Wight Strollers were absent, Park of the Dead returned with their zombie-themed entry promoting the event at Puckpool Park later this year. Local business Wight Karting also displayed several of their go-karts, which had been especially decorated with illuminations.
Ryde’s illuminated procession marks the end of another carnival season on the Isle of Wight.
Editor’s note: The decision was taken to limit our carnival coverage this year to allow our small team to focus on other stories. We hope to return with more comprehensive coverage than ever before in 2017 and look forward to working with carnival committees to help promote each event.
