Firefighters are reminding Islanders to get their chimneys swept following a fire at a property in Ryde yesterday evening (Thursday).
1 appliance was mobilised to an address on Great Preston Road at just before 18:30, with crews spending several hours on scene.
Specialist chimney equipment and buckets of water were used to extinguish the fire.
It was discovered during the course of the incident that the log burner present at the property had been burning day and night since November – but hadn’t been swept for over a year.
Islanders are being directed to home fire safety advice at www.iow.gov.uk/Residents/Fire-and-Rescue-Service/Home-Fire-Safety-Advice-and-Education/In-the-Home2.
Most chimney fires are preventable. Regular inspection and cleaning of chimney flues will help prevent fires within your chimney. The fire was at a friend of mines, and he told me that the Fire crew were brilliant. The worked for hours, with hot filthy water dripping down onto them, and despite the hard work and long hours, remained cheerful and professional. He just wanted to say that these guys are a credit to the Fire service and to thank them so much.
I am sure all of us who have had to use 999 think and feel the same. Too taken for granted imo.
They really are underappreciated, glad to hear that it was sorted in the end!
Wonder if it had a clue liner up the chimney ?
