A Newport man who failed to stop at a red light and crashed into an Audi SUV as a result has been slapped with 6 points on his licence by Magistrates.
31-year-old Leon Phillips, of Dairy Crest Drive in Newport, appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court last Tuesday (24th September) where he pleaded guilty to a single charge of driving without due care and attention.
It relates to an incident that occurred in the middle of Newport Town Centre on the night of 30th January this year.
Police were called to the junction of High Street and St James Street at around 21:00 when an Audi RS3 – travelling northbound on St James’ Street – crashed into the Audi SQ7 of a local businessman, who was travelling down the High Street.
Paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service checked over those involved in the crash – including a young baby – but thankfully only minor injuries were sustained.
Having heard the circumstances of the crash, Magistrates handed Phillips 6 penalty points on his licence, fined him £320 and ordered him to pay £85 costs with a £128 surcharge.
