Popular fine-dining restaurant Thompson’s in Newport is to reopen early next year after being closed for nearly 3 years.
The restaurant, based on Town Lane in the County Town, shut its doors back in March 2020 when the first COVID-19 lockdown was announced.
But in a post announced on his Facebook page on Friday, head chef and owner Robert Thompson has said the restaurant is back.
In 2006 Thompson won his first Michelin star whilst working in Lincolnshire at Winteringham Fields, and at the time, aged just 23, became the youngest chef in the UK to be awarded the prestigious accolade.
Thompson opened his own restaurant, with exactly the same name, back in 2o15 after stints at The Hambrough in Ventnor and The George Hotel in Yarmouth.
The premises grew rapidly and was one of the go-to places to eat for any foodies on the Island before it closed in 2020.
Whilst the restaurant lay empty for almost 3 years, the 41-year-old worked at Foresters Hall in Cowes and even appeared on BBC’s The One Show back in October cooking up a storm for the pupils of Cowes Enterprise College.
On his Facebook page, Robert Thompson has said:
“After almost 3 years, with a team of faces both old and new, a few changes, and a lick of paint – it’s time.
“Can’t wait to get the stoves back on, and welcome you back to the place that makes me smile.”

Hope nobody gets ill like i did…doesnt matter how bigger name above the door, if the staff dont follow suit people get ill….
Obviously the venture in Cowes didn’t work out for him so he crawled back to his restaurant thats been laid bare for 3 years..
My friends went there for lunch; they were only customers; expensive but excellent service. Also no parking at Cowes.
Got to be a gamble , cost of everything going up and up no one will have the spare cash to be doing luxury things like going out to restaurants ,might get a few now and then but can’t see it being a big regular thing .
But best of luck though
The only thing I heard about the eatery were not positive most said it was over priced and therefore not a great experience .. nicer places exist on the island Try the Terrace, Yarmouth !
If you’ve got a supermodel appetite then it’s the place to go lol.
