Police have cordoned off the canoe lake in Ryde this afternoon (Wednesday) over fears of a possible bird flu outbreak.
Locals are being kept away from the area as a precautionary measure following the death of 7 swans, as previously reported by Island Echo.
Steps leading down to the water’s edge have been closed and North Walk has been shut off to motorists.
A number of Police officers are patrolling the area to advise walkers to steer clear in the interests of public safety.
There is a very small risk to human life but bird flu is deadly to avian life and can spread quickly. Officials take to culling in a bid to prevent the spread.
Investigations are underway to determine whether the swans have died from bird flu or not with updates expected from DEFRA, the Council and Police in due course.
Poultry and captive bird keepers are advised to be vigilant for any signs of disease in their birds and any wild birds, and seek prompt advice from their vet if they have any concerns.
Dead birds must be reported to the Defra helpline on 03459 33 55 77 (option 7), and keepers should report suspicion of disease to APHA on 03000 200 301.
