Police have closed the High Street in Newport this afternoon (Friday) in order to recreate the scene of a fatal collision between a lorry and an 81-year-old woman.
Officers closed the upper part of the High Street at just gone 12:00, with the lorry involved in Monday’s incident brought in to help with ongoing investigations.
It’s been suggested that the elderly woman came into contact with the lorry outside Clarks, with the heavy goods vehicle coming to a stop just past the traffic lights further down the road.
As previously reported by Island Echo, an 81-year-old woman from Totland was tragically killed on Monday afternoon. Emergency services rushed to the scene outside the former Carphone Warehouse shop but there was nothing that could be done to save the woman’s life.
A 24-year-old man from Bembridge – the driver of the JPC Construction lorry – was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving but has since been released under investigation.
Police are appealing for any witnesses to come forward and would particularly like to speak to anyone with relevant dash cam, doorbell or CCTV footage.
Anyone with relevant information should call 101 quoting reference number 44230020631.

Useful time to close the roads, why not on Sunday?
You are very fortunate, as it would appear from your comment you have no emotional attachment to all those involved, as neither do I.
All those involved will want closure including the driver, investigators have a job to do as well, their job does not revolve around other peoples diary.
This event is tragic enough, as soon as conclusions are come to, the better for all concerned, I.E. All concerned directly and hopefully the avoidance of it happening again.
My sympathy lies with all concerned, who must be in utter despair. As for you Tony, I am sorry that the best you can do is come out with that comment. I feel sure the investigators will apologise to you!
imagine having morals in 2023
Because the police will be examining the same vehicle, in the same location, at the same time of day, and trying to reconstruct the scene with the exact same circumstances as the day it happened, as near as possible to the day of the incident. They’ll be looking at the position of the vehicles, even the position of the sun, and the volume of traffic.
The thinking of the police and the interests of the travelling public are not joined up. They used to be decades ago but that is no longer the case. No one controls the police. They do as they wish when they wish.
So guess that CCTV doesn’t still record in Newport – From Council Press Release – Isle of Wight Council said: “One hundred CCTV cameras will continue to operate in the same locations and the CCTV footage will still be available to the police on request for evidence purposes.
So sorry for this lady and family and the lorry driver who didn’t start his day with intention of killing someone.
As someone with a little knowledge on this subject, I think you’ll find that this is a neccesary step to solve every aspect of the situation. CCTV is NOT the be-all and end-all, and it actually proves nothing. Especially without sound. The poor driver, the family of the lady and all concerned would want it all sorted and cleared quickly, so unfortunately people will just have to put up with it – I would think it’s a small price to pay really.
I wasn’t saying it wasn’t necessary of course needs investigate ,but police were asking for CCTV footage and I like many assumed the system still worked ?.
A valid thought Freddie I did think the same thing myself. They have probably had a few different versions as I’d imagine no one intended to witness a road accident
I work on this CCTV system and I can assure you it’s been operational since its installation in the early 2000s. Unless controlled by an operator, these camera tours to preset locations for an allotted amount of time.
There is a chance the camera wasn’t facing in the correct direction. So your assumption is very wrong
This was an accident that should have never happened I send my sincere condolences to the family and friends of the lady ..now a full and rigorous investigation should be completed, and recommendations, adopted by IWC, but I fear the later will not happen, the councils past attitude to serious accidents where fatalities have happened .. has been at best … appalling.
That stretch of the High Street is always car-logged, especially mid-afternoon. And even as cars move slowly along the narrow carriageway shoppers are crossing, dodging in and out of the moving line. I see nothing wrong with that particularly in a slow-moving train of vehicles. You see the same thing in the supermarket car park lanes. But every now and again you do get the ‘speed merchant’ and the startled shoppers are obliged to jump out of the way – exactly as some had to do in Morrisons car park today while some moron revved his moronic way past.
Do shops in Newport have CCTV that cover the front door onto the High Street?
This was caused by the stupid council giving lorry’s no choice but to drive through town
Understandable, especially if the driver can recall his speed or has the speed been recorded on a monitor? Don’t these vehicles operate on air brakes? If so there are a lot of ? over the whole incident to be answered.
Just a comment on the CCTV aspect
We were involved in an accident on Coppins Bridge last May but the Police said the CCTV was not working.
Maybe this need some consideration.
Just another cut the council have made so they can get a bit of extra money in their pockets
Further proof if you can’t drive in a Citroen C1, you shouldn’t be in charge of a lorry (and that’s coming from someone who drink drives in GranTurismo often)
you all act like children leave all who are connected alone, the driver is under enough stress and trauma so leave the poor lad alone, even if she did get dragged under a wheel and he didnt realise he wouldve had no reason to feel the need to look in his mirror if you were in the position the outcome would be the same so shut up!
